    Description

When is the last time you thought about the state of your soul?

The health of your soul isn't just a matter of saved or unsaved. It’s the hinge on which the rest of your life hangs. It's the difference between deep, satisfied spirituality and a restless, dispassionate faith. In an age of materialism and consumerism that tries to buy its way to happiness, many souls are starved and unhealthy, unsatisfied by false promises of status and wealth.

We've neglected this eternal part of ourselves, focusing instead on the temporal concerns of the world - and not without consequence.Including reflections from his decades-long relationship with his friend and mentor Dallas Willard, best-selling author John Ortberg presents another classic that will help you discover your soul - the most important connection to God there is - and find your way out of the spiritual shallow-lands to true divine depth.

With characteristic insight and an accessible story-filled approach, Ortberg guides you through several practices to restore your soul so you can experience a life of wholeness, balance, and hope.

    Dallas Willard for Dummies

I have read several of Dallas Willard's books. Some of them with friends who were equally intent on gleaning just some of the rich insights they presented. And we did, however always with some frustration and disappointment because we knew there was more.
John Ortberg has given people like me—and I know there are more—a gift. His account of his personal pilgrimage with Dallas as his mentor has afforded me a better understanding of some of the concepts I longed to understand from some of Dallas' writings.
Thank you, John. I mean no disrespect for the headline of this review...only gratitude.

    Good Book - poor narrator

What did you like best about Soul Keeping? What did you like least?

Great Ideas - much of which are a summary of Dallas Willard's thoughts on Spiritual Formation. Ortberg is funny and has a great voice - it's too bad he did not narrate this audio book. It really detracted from his ideas that the narrator failed to capture his humor or proper emphasis.

    Excellent, meditative, and challenging!

"You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life." This book not only delves into why but touches on how. An excellent read and read with excellence. Highly recommended.

I may need to also purchase a written copy

Gets better the deeper into the book you go. I am going back to re-listen to some chapters and take notes.

    Excellent insight into our souls.

Offers encouragement and guidance for nourishing our souls and a better understanding of what and who is primary in our lives. I am more able to seek and hear God's word when focusing on keeping my soul right with God.

    Starts slow, ends well

I felt like the beginning took a long time establishing "what is the soul," but maybe that was helpful for some.
Last half was excellent and inspiring.

    Good for Dallas Willard fans

Ortberg remembers his friendship with the late author, philosopher, and Christian apologist, and his (Ortberg's) own spiritual development over the course of more than 20 years. He discusses the need of the soul for rest. He is reassuring, even on the subject of the "dark night of the soul." The text is not very demanding (you might want to investigate St. John of the Cross), and it is at its best in the passages on Willard, whose books are very rich and rigorous. All in all, a good introduction to Willard, who is a wise man worth knowing. (His final book is to be published posthumously soon.)

    Phenomenal!

So many things I needed to hear right now! Next reads will be by Dallas Willard and St John of the Cross (Dark Night of the Soul).

    Deeper

This book took me to a deeper understanding of God’s desire to dwell with me. I feel more peace about my grief journey after losing my husband to cancer two years ago. This book provided words for emotions I haven’t been able to express.
