H. L. Mencken
In Politics, legendary American journalist and cultural critic H. L. Mencken turns his famously sharp wit toward Congress, political machines, elections, and the people who make their careers within them.
With characteristic sarcasm and an almost gleeful refusal to be polite, Mencken argues that the American political system too often rewards conformity, ambition, and loyalty to the local political machine rather than intelligence, independence, or integrity. He examines the structure of congressional representation, the influence of party bosses, the power of organized political movements, and the relentless desire of politicians to remain in office.
Mencken's discussion of Prohibition provides a particularly revealing case study. Rather than viewing politics simply as a contest of ideas, he examines how pressure groups learned to influence politicians by threatening the thing many valued most—their jobs.
Provocative, funny, merciless, and unmistakably Mencken, Politics captures one of America's great skeptics confronting the machinery of democracy itself.
Written more than a century ago, its observations about political ambition, party loyalty, organized pressure, public opinion, and the quality of elected leadership can feel remarkably familiar to modern listeners.
Narrated by Tony J. Martin, Politics is an entertaining piece of classic American political and social criticism for listeners interested in U.S. history, government, journalism, political philosophy, and the writings of H. L. Mencken.
