Piper is a lich-doctor, a physician who works among the dead, determining causes of death for the city guard's investigations. Though (imho) the very explicit sex scenes still feel uneasy, like forced voyeurism and all the characters seem obsessed with sex (and not in the most elegant words), and very straight to business. Also, when strong muscular characters in chainmail push an acquaintance against a wall, emprison and kiss them without their consent, it is assault not romance. Both in 2nd and 3rd book this is the beginning of a relationship. Not a good start... When they subsequently apologise, both the assaulted character say they didn't mind and enjoyed it. That is a disturbing and unrealistic notion to spread about such aggressions. More likely to get bruises and emotional shock, than happy confidence and love towards that person.
Apart from that, the relationship between the two main protagonists is subsequently cute and respectful. Nice description of thoughts and feelings. Also more profund a bond they share than previous 2nd book, in which the paladin had much more going on between the legs than in the heart and showed more interested in Clara's breasts than her personality.
I also loved the guard person character (unsure about spelling: Earstripe?), great voice action and dialogues! and the thoughtfull and kind concern for their people's rights from his friends. It was nice seeing Clara again, even if briefly. She has a great impressive personality.
