'The literary phenomenon of the decade.'
Guardian
'A Tube stop-missing, escalator-reading tale.' Evening Standard

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins.

Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. It's unique in its ability to delve into the intricate nuances of the main characters' feelings, experiences, and thoughts.

However, I noticed some inconsistencies. Despite the narrative emphasizing Marianne's independence from others' opinions, she seems entangled with her unlikable boyfriend, conforming to his wishes against her will. The connection with the photographer raises questions too, as it takes her a while to disengage.

Cornell's character also feels somewhat incomplete; he recognizes Marianne's brokenness and appreciates Hellene’s normality but abruptly ends things with Hellene without subsequent reflection. Though the characters felt somewhat fictional, they remained likable.

Very boring book, very little substance. The writing feels like a high schooler's. And I've never found an audiobook where the reading fakes thick men's voices in such a ridiculous way, it's so bad it's almost comical.

Boring. Ridiculous reading
