'The literary phenomenon of the decade.' Guardian
'The book that defined a generation.' Stylist
**The modern classic behind the BAFTA-winning series. **
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins.
Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't.
'Tender and devastating.' Guardian
'A book to cancel plans for.' Grazia
'A classic coming-of-age love story.' Vogue

However, I noticed some inconsistencies. Despite the narrative emphasizing Marianne's independence from others' opinions, she seems entangled with her unlikable boyfriend, conforming to his wishes against her will. The connection with the photographer raises questions too, as it takes her a while to disengage.
Cornell's character also feels somewhat incomplete; he recognizes Marianne's brokenness and appreciates Hellene’s normality but abruptly ends things with Hellene without subsequent reflection. Though the characters felt somewhat fictional, they remained likable.
