Description
The Sunday Times Thriller of the Month
Expertly researched and visionary in scale, international number one best seller Ken Follett’s Never is more than a thriller. It imagines a scenario we all hope never comes true, one that will keep you transfixed until the final moments....
A stolen US army drone.
A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert.
A secret stash of deadly chemicals.
Each is a threat to the stability of the world but individually are problems that can be overcome. In the diplomatic arena though, everyone will have a different way of dealing with such a threat. And when those in charge disagree and refuse to back down, it will kick off an international chain reaction with potentially catastrophic consequences: a world edging closer to war....
Now three people must work tirelessly and with the utmost skill to stop that from happening:
A spy working undercover with jihadists.
A brilliant Chinese spymaster.
A US president beleaguered by a populist rival for the next election.
The only question is, in a game of brinksmanship can the inevitable ever be stopped?
Commentaires
“A compelling story, and only too realistic.” (Lawrence H. Summers, former US treasury secretary)
"Bold in scale and meticulously researched." (Sunday Times)
"A stunning thriller and one of the most compelling reads of the year." (Daily Express)

Longwinded
I imagine the abridged version would be a better listen. The narrator did a good job but I the storyline suffered a lot of longwinded unnecessary American love life deviations. I didn't mind listening to only one or two chapters a day unlike other Ken Follett novels where I could not stop.

Great Listen but Jesus Ken; leaving it there?
I found this a good listen and generally enjoyed it although I found the bit of box ticking tiresome and I suspect Ken might be doing some sort of penance for previous sins of bias.
But Ken, did you really have to leave it there? I suppose you did otherwise how would you end it but going from absolute tension to the end and nothing, wow. There must be a better way. I was hanging out to know how this was all going to work itself out to bang finished.

World War III - Never
This brilliantly narrated book is Ken Follett at his usual best. The only negative aspect of reading (listening to) a Ken Follett book, it is difficult to find a book of the same calibre to listen to after you have finished the book.

Nun…

Maybe the weakest Follet ever

I liked it a lot!
In a nutshell: Good story, good characters, great narrator.
Usually it takes a multi-thread story a couple hundred pages/ minutes until it all runs together and the story gains momentum. In this case every thread for itself is immediately entertaining and interesting. Whenever the story changed to another thread I was kind of upset because I wanted it to go on. But after a couple of paragraphs I was into the new line of the story and wanted that one to go on.
Masterfully crafted and I hope sincerely that there is going to be a follow up, because the sudden end leaves me in suspense about the following minutes, days and maybe weeks and month to come for all the characters I got so much interested in.

What a disappointment
Typical american: if we could have communicated better, all this would not have happened.
Missing all diplomatic channels beyond one person. Decisions aren’t made that isolated (not talking to your partner but sending bombs in their name… yeah… no) and decisions aren’t made that quickly.
Its ludicrous and not the well known Follett at all. The writing style is still good, its the fantasy of the story thats just poor. Research within diplomatic groups, contact to the Chinese and their perception would have helped.
I enjoyed some modern formulations. The reference to female characters and the side stories. Other than that, my head still hurts from all the unbelievable shaking.

Da ist man besseres von Follett gewohnt
Achtung - Spoileralarm !
Schade.

A frightening story in a frightening time
Good story and an excellent narrator.
One can only hope, something like that NEVER happens.
