Description

The trees are green and hedgerows are bursting with new life as spring arrives in the Cotswolds, but inside a house that Melissa Craig used to know well, something terrible has happened....

Melissa has just finished writing her latest mystery novel and is enjoying the arrival of spring. She’s decided to let her fictional detective retire at last and perhaps put her own days of investigating behind her, too. But the ink has barely dried on the page when Melissa receives shocking news: Her estranged father has been found dead in the family home and her mother, Sylvia, is under suspicion of murder.

Melissa hasn’t seen her parents for nearly 30 years, but on hearing the dreadful news she rushes to her mother’s side. Melissa is sure that Sylvia could never commit a murder, but Sylvia does seem to be keeping secrets....

With no one else to turn to, Sylvia begs Melissa to investigate the case. Melissa knows her father was a difficult man, but now she needs to work out who wanted him dead...a disgruntled employee, the controlling family lawyer, or perhaps the woman with whom he was having an affair?

When another body is found, Melissa realizes she’s dealing with a ruthless killer. As the police close in, trying to pin both deaths on her mother, Melissa must act fast. Can she find a way to unmask the true killer before she loses her mother for a second time and possibly forever?

If you can’t get enough of murder mysteries by Agatha Christie, Faith Martin or P. D. James, you’ll love this twisty detective novel!

Normally excellent narrator chose whiney tone to much of dialogue

...more than one character’s dialogue difficult to listen to in this normally excellent authors work and historically melodious and enjoyable narrators acting. Possibly poor direction resulted in the ongoing whiney tones throughout. Don’t give up on this author or narrator. Both have a proven successful track record, trust this is production is a rare error in directive judgement

Not Bad

This wasn't the best murder mystery, but it was good enough to keep me interested. Narrator was ok - I felt she did a very good job at voicing the mother, however most of the other characters' voices didn't sound distinctive enough to stand apart from each other. This was one of the freebies I selected, so for being free it wasn't a bad listen at all.

Audible by machine

The fact that it is a machine reading the book ( and not actors) caused this to be the most disappointing purchase from audible to date!!!

Good story. Exciting and fooled me

Loved the characters and plot. Her mother sounded way to whiny but I got used to her. Much better than the last one but I didn’t like the character “flaws” in the last book.

5 stars

I always enjoy spending time with a Melissa Craig novel. The mystery is well developed with several twists and turns. The characters are engaging and believable. The story moves at a quick pace and the villain is never predictable. I can't wait for the next book.

Very boring. No detecting going on. Repetitive.

After four hours nothing had happened in the book re detecting or clues. The speaker is not good at all, everyone has the same voice and way of speaking. The way and reason the murderer is detected is the most unimaginative way possible. Because he/she knew something, nobody else knew....zzzzz.
