Description

Cotswolds tearoom owner Gemma Rose is excited to join the May Day celebrations in Oxford...until the beautiful spring morning ends in murder. Now, she's embroiled in a deadly mystery - with four nosy old ladies determined to help in the sleuthing! Before she knows it, Gemma finds herself stalking a Russian "princess" and keeping up with the Old Biddies in Krav Maga class, while still trying to serve delicious cakes and buttery scones at her quaint English tearoom.

And that's just the start of her worries: there's her little tabby cat, Muesli, who is causing havoc at the local nursing home...and what should she do with the creepy plants that her mother keeps buying for her new cottage?

But the mystery that's really bothering Gemma is her boyfriend's odd behavior. Devlin O'Connor has always been enigmatic, but, recently, the handsome CID detective has been strangely distant and evasive. Could he be lying to her? But why?

I love this series, BUT...

This is one of my favorite series all around. The narration brings all the characters to life, and I especially love the "old biddies."

However, Jemma was exceptionally annoying in this book. She was a jealous clingy girlfriend, acting insecure the whole book long. She over analyzes every single move her boyfriend makes. In one scene she decides to call Devlin and see if he's free. When she can't get ahold of him she decides to pack up her cat, an overnight bag & show up unannounced at his house. She acts like a slightly crazy jealous girl, going back & forth in her mind if Devlin is cheating on her. It's exhausting.. I could have used way less of that.

Otherwise I love this series & the rest of it is incredibly enjoyable to listen to!

Another Fun Mystery

Gemma's day ends in murder and the old biddies are very interested in helping to solve it and are getting in the way. Even sweet little Muesli is getting into trouble. What is going on here!! Everyone is giving Gemma problems. And is this the end for Gemma and her boyfriend? Why is he avoiding her? I just love all the characters in these stories. They are lively and full of mystery and fun. You just know that if you visit the Tearoom and surrounding town, you are going to love talking to them all. And Pearl Hunter, the narrator, just makes these characters and stories come alive with her reading. She makes it sound so charming.

Impatient

I’m getting tired of the very slow pace of the romance between Gemma and Devlin. It’s an underlying aggravation throughout the whole story. Let’s get on with it.

Spoiled Russian Princess

These Hanna Mysteries are just the thing when wanting a light cozy British tale. This is especially true for me while at home during the the Covid-19 lockdown when a fun story with all the usual Tea Room characters are involved. I look forward to book six.

Charming Series, But Not Without Issues

I have listened to the prior four books and the prequel as well. This series charming and lighthearted and the narration really makes this series amazing.

However, the lead character (Gemma) is not just a flawed character — she’s obnoxious and often unlikeable. I wish the Old Biddies and Meusli the cat were the focus of this series and Gemma were a side character who owns the tea room the Biddies meet in. The romance between Gemma and the detective is tired and uninteresting — especially since Gemma acts like she is a teenager rather than someone approaching 30. If Gemma behaved like an adult, a lot of the tedious aspects of this series would melt away. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will get that kind of character development.

Aside from Gemma, this series is so much fun. I look forward to the next installment even if I have to endure the terrible romance and Gemma’s churlish behavior.

Highly enjoyable

Muffins and Morning Tea, my fourteenth read/listen from author H.Y. Hanna & the fifth in the Oxford Tearoom mysteries. An enjoyable cozy mystery. My wife & I have taken to listening to the books together. We love the narrator’s British accent; I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Pearl Hewitt, especially her oh so cute animal sounds. Cozy Mystery/romance, captivating primary characters, what other blurbs can I use to describe these books? Oh well, buy the book, read the books, get into a good author and some good characters as I have. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Good for housework

I have to admit, that i rated the first audiobook rather bad, and I stand by that. The author is very limited in vocabulary, phrases and originality.

so why have i bought more of H.Y. Hannas audiobooks?
Well, because I realized, that it works very well for doing housework. it is not too exciting so i would be too destracted. i really like the voice of Pearl Hewitt, and the story is nothing more than a soap or teenagerstory. nothing worrying and for somebody with english as second language easy enough to understand. BUT now after 5 books i have to say that i am rather fed up with the same expressions, comparisons and phrases over and over again. i have to look for something else.

This has got to be one of the most annoying...

...protagonists ever. I don't understand why an author would choose to portray her main character as a snotty, childish, entitled young lady. It destroys an otherwise darling story and atmosphere.

Zurück in Meadowford-on-Smythe ...

... und wieder gibt es Tote. Gemma und Devlin ermitteln und die Old Biddies in einer "Action-Rolle" ... Krav Maga und so ... irre komisch und zum Wiederhören!

Uneingeschränkte Hörempfehlung!
