Description
As a young woman, Leah Penn-Leith fell hopelessly in love with Captain Fox Carnegie—the only irrational mark on her decidedly sensible life. Fox, unfortunately, did not return her regard.
Their story should have ended there—Fox left for India and Leah returned home to Scotland to rear her much younger brothers.
Twenty years later, Fox appears on Leah's doorstep—older, scarred, and world-weary—proposing a marriage of convenience between them. He needs a mother for his young ward, and Leah, with her capable good sense, comes highly recommended. What woman could say no to such a proposal? Not Leah. Fox has always wreaked havoc on her ability to think rationally.
After their marriage, Leah confronts the chaotic reality of Fox's life. His castle, ten miles up a rugged Highland glen, is shambolic. His ward, Madeline, is a precocious handful. Fox's time in India is shrouded in rumor and mystery. Worst of all, Fox himself is distant and broken, his personality as altered as his scarred body.
Leah is left with two questions: What happens to a woman after her most-cherished fantasy comes true? And can a marriage, begun in practicality, transform into something deeper? Something like . . . love.

Amazing book! Loved it!
I can't say enough good about this book. It made me laugh and cry. Such a great, unique story with characters that really come to life. Poetic and profound writing. I've read the book and listened to the Audiobook. Both are great! Nichole Van is such a great author and I love all her books. This one did not disappoint! If only they would make a movie of it!

Refreshingly, romantic
I chose this reading, because the storyline was phenomenal, the performance was perfect, and the overall production could not have been better. I love the setting, the era, the developed characters.

Great book!
I read this book and now have listened to the audio version. The audio version brings more depth to this story. Like all of Ms Van's books, I found myself laughing out loud. The characters in her books are so likeable and the stories are fun and sometimes a bit serious but always fabulous. Great narration too!

don't skip this one
it's difficult to describe this book in a short review. it is so well written I don't know who couldn't enjoy it. the characters are so well written, they are real people in my mind. I often have difficulties picturing the characters when I listen to audiobooks but they became so vivid in my head, as if I knew them in real life.
I had certainly never read a book like this one. I read the Kindle, then saw the audiobook came out the same day I finished the book, and had to listen to it. even though I had just experienced the story, I couldn't say good bye to it. experiencing the story a second time made me enjoy it even more. that's how good it is. even after a 2nd time, I still can't move on.
the performance is also very good. the switch between the British and Scottish accent is good enough to be convincing. the Scottish accent isn't too thick which makes it easier to understand.
as far as the story goes, I don't wanna say too much. the less you know the better. the suspense is amazing, the story is riveting and the romance is sooo good, and so different than your usual romance novel, at least in my experience and opinion. the book is a little longer than I'm used to, but each word is necessary for the story and makes the progress of the plot and character development realistic and even more fulfilling than usual. this story is worth the credit, trust me!
