    Description

The third thrilling book in the stunning Predator Cities series!

The mighty engines of Anchorage have been rusted and dead for years. The derelict city no longer roams the Ice Wastes, but has settled on the edge of the land that was once America. Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw are happy in the safety of a static settlement, but their daughter, Wren, is desperate for adventure. When a dangerously charming submarine pirate offers her a chance to escape, Wren doesn't think twice about leaving her home and her parents behind. But the pirate wants something in return - Wren must steal the mysterious Tin Book. To do so will ignite a conflict that could tear the whole world apart.

    Horrible in the best way

I mean in terms of the story being about complex broken people. Reader beware, this is not a story about saints doing good deeds and not all the good guys get to ride into the sunset. There is a bit of plot contrivance but otherwise the story is compelling, if dark.

    no longer a children's story.

When we are children we need childish things, when we grow up, we don't need those toys unless they grow with us. Tom and Hester have grown up and in doing so, make them so much more relatable. This story felt like time spent with flawed but cherished old friends.

    Slightly disappointing

Characters seem static and almost unrelatable. First in the series i was actually dissatisfied with.

Written like a movie, not in a good way

Review is valid for the audiobook version. The print could feel different.

I'm 17 years or so late to the party and a late adopter in pop fiction. Simply feeling inspired to share.

People don't generally think or respond to one another in the ways the characters do. Cultures can be different, but in this storytelling style, each theatrical character arc seems inconsistent and universally juvenile - sometimes moreso the case for the adults.

To this end, the style seems to understand it's young audience well. A poorly developed driving force for Hester's (spoiler alert) predictable and lazily developed abandonment of Wren and Tom s a relevant such example. Lots of teens think their parents are spastic and distant.

Somehow, Tom hadn't matured in 16 years.

Wren was empathetic. The kids do think that way and she responded to her mom going quickly and violently nuts in a reasonable fashion.

Poor Fishcake -I guess to write heroes even you need villains - he could be a good one.

In general I figured Peter Jackson was more involved in investing in deep epics, so I read this cover to cover and was disappointed. I suppose this could be part of why the film saga failed after episode 1.

And I acknowledge this can be a sensitive topic, so I say it softly, to me the religious nod to Christian theology seemed more like audience apeasement and marketing line than the thoughtful exploration such a topic deserves, especially in the violent post apocalyptic genre.

I digress. Some people may like it. Zeppelins and submarines and floating cities are cool.

3/5 stars on a lazy sunny summer Sunday. Less in the winter. A bit like generic grocery store ice cream.

I won't pick up book 4 unless strictly necessary.

    Odd and Interesting

A good continuation of the story, filled with bizarre but evocative descriptions. And, of course, a little painful.

    losing my interest

the first book was great, the second was alright but this one didn't keep my interest. it too forever to get through because it became predictable, boring and lacked the more complex character development of the first book.

Had a good message at the end...

Just not as good as the previous books. I'm looking forward to the next one and hoping the story and character development will be better.

Good, just not as good as the first 2

Great performance as usual. The story is good, but it didn't feel as fleshed out or interesting as the previous 2 books. If you're familiar with Hyperion and books 3 and 4 in the series, you'll know what I mean when I say that a flash forwards sometimes leaves you wanting more than what you got. Still enjoyed it though!
