Description

Shortlisted for best audiobook in the Specsavers National Book Awards 2018.

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Heroes, written and read by Stephen Fry.

There are heroes - and then there are Greek heroes. Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such bold and heart-stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils or outwitted scheming vengeful gods quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek heroes.

In this companion to his best-selling Mythos, Stephen Fry brilliantly retells these dramatic, funny, tragic and timeless tales. Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece. See Atalanta - who was raised by bears - outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples. Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx, and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera.

Heroes is the story of what we mortals are truly capable of - at our worst and our very best.

A Practically Perfect Book in Every Way

There are few greater joys than hearing an old and beloved story told again in a new and powerful way. Stephen Fry's writing and performance make these anciant and well known myths both fresh and exciting.
Even those I can recite by heart kept me wildly entertained.
A truly wonderful book and audiobook.

Wonderful

Truly enjoyable, both the story and the narration are perfect. This book goes deeper and more detailed into ancient Greek stories than any other book I've ever read. Surely recommend to anyone interested in Greek mythology.

Pure magic. Stephen Fry is transcendent.

Both the story and narrative are excellent! It was a very special experience to revisit the ancient Greek universe. I wish Stephen Fry could have been my history teacher. And English teacher. And art teacher. And... well, you get the idea

An engaging continuation of Mythos

This book's subject is lives and deeds of Greek heroes. The narration is (as always) brilliant and the plot most engaging. Recommended to anyone struggling with original Greek sources on heroes but interested in Greek hero myths. The stories are spiced with humor and drama, but remain faithful to the original. Fry sometimes offers insight on how different types of heroes reflected changes in Greek society over time.

Brilliant.

Just like Mythos, this is a superb audio book. How often books are read to quick and out emotionless. This one is so engaging and even easy to follow while driving. (I still need the 30s back button regularly off course, traffic is more important while driving, but with some books it's just impossible) It's a great interpretation of many a myth and I'm looking forward to the 3rd of the series.

Stephen Fry is a god!

I can't praise this book enough! The stories are as old as time, but they have never been told in such and astoundingly brilliant way. Stephen Fry's narration is sublime, he really is a genius, I loved every moment of the book!

Once again, Stephen Fry brings us a collection of stories, along with some interesting facts and food for thought. I recommend this, along with Mythos.

Gripping trip to mythical times

Expectations were high after hearing "Mythos", but Stephen Fry managed again to keep my ear stuck to the audio book and never wanting to press the stop button. "His" stories are highly entertaining, instructive and gripping. They can be hilarious or terribly sad, depending on the plot. They're everything but boring and I am so grateful that Stephen Fry brought ancient myth down to us in such an easily abordable way. Stay on these roads, Mr. Fry, pleeease...

Not as gripping as Mythos, but still great

As always, Stephen Fry is a perfect storyteller. The stories themselves, however, were not quite as exciting as Mythos, but that might be because I knew them too well before listening to the book

Among the best audiobooks in existence

Just like Mythos, this book is just "superb". Stephen Fry is one of the best speakers I have ever heard, even after several hours of continuous listening I did not get tired of hearing him. The book has wit, it doesn't judge but well question, it is excellent. I will most likely play this several times in the future.
