Description

Shortlisted for best audiobook in the Specsavers National Book Awards 2018.

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Heroes, written and read by Stephen Fry.

There are heroes - and then there are Greek heroes. Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such bold and heart-stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils or outwitted scheming vengeful gods quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek heroes.

In this companion to his best-selling Mythos, Stephen Fry brilliantly retells these dramatic, funny, tragic and timeless tales. Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece. See Atalanta - who was raised by bears - outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples. Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx, and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera.

Heroes is the story of what we mortals are truly capable of - at our worst and our very best.

Wonderful

Truly enjoyable, both the story and the narration are perfect. This book goes deeper and more detailed into ancient Greek stories than any other book I've ever read. Surely recommend to anyone interested in Greek mythology.

An engaging continuation of Mythos

This book's subject is lives and deeds of Greek heroes. The narration is (as always) brilliant and the plot most engaging. Recommended to anyone struggling with original Greek sources on heroes but interested in Greek hero myths. The stories are spiced with humor and drama, but remain faithful to the original. Fry sometimes offers insight on how different types of heroes reflected changes in Greek society over time.

Pure magic. Stephen Fry is transcendent.

Both the story and narrative are excellent! It was a very special experience to revisit the ancient Greek universe. I wish Stephen Fry could have been my history teacher. And English teacher. And art teacher. And... well, you get the idea

The passion of Stephen Fry

I don’t care what the book is about - if Sir Stephen Fry is reading it, I am listening to it. But I have rarely been mesmerized like in these books and I hope to the heavens that the third one is published soon. He really makes English and the language a joy and I suddenly developed a indescribable joy for Greek Mythology! Definitely a must-listen!

Absolutely marvelous

As all other works written or performed by Stephen Fry, this book too reminded me why I love stories, myths and the English language. A beautiful retelling of the Greek legends and a wonderful audio experience.

<br />Loved it!

I loved it so much that I need to read it as well. I have no doubt that I will (as I have with Mythos) and I cannot wait for the final book in this trilogy. Stephen Fry, you are my hero!

Myths, laughs and a lot of learning

Great way to pass the time! Stephen Fry’s voice is amazing! I have no idea if the book is truly based on the original myths but it sure was fun to listen to it!

Once more Mister Fry delights

Just as with his book Mythos, Stephen Fry delights with his fantastic telling of the greek myths, and again while some of the versions told are not my favorit versions of them, No one tells the myths with quit the same wit or charm
And mister Fry are once again deligently pointing out some of the other versions of the myths so we may choose for ourselvs our prefered version

Brilliant

Once again, Stephen Fry brings us a collection of stories, along with some interesting facts and food for thought. I recommend this, along with Mythos.

Among the best audiobooks in existence

Just like Mythos, this book is just "superb". Stephen Fry is one of the best speakers I have ever heard, even after several hours of continuous listening I did not get tired of hearing him. The book has wit, it doesn't judge but well question, it is excellent. I will most likely play this several times in the future.

Greek heroes didn't come from Maltby

Totally unlistenable to thanks to Fry, surprisingly, deciding to ham it up and ascribe British regional accents as his leitmotif attempt. Perseus sounds like a comedy sketch extra from Last Of The Summer Wine. Avoid at all costs.
