Description

The best-selling adaptation of the iconic video game Halo: Combat Evolved featuring the Master Chief - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series!

It's 2552. Having barely escaped the final battle for Reach against the vast alien alliance known as the Covenant, the crew of the Pillar of Autumn, including Spartan John-117 - the Master Chief - and his AI companion Cortana, is forced to make a desperate escape into slipspace. But their destination brings them to an ancient mystery and an even greater struggle. In this far-flung corner of the universe floats a magnificently massive, artificial ringworld. The crew’s only hope of survival is to crash-land on its surface and take the battle opposing the Covenant to the ground.

But they soon discover that this enigmatic ringworld is much more than it seems. Built 100,00 years ago by a long-lost civilization known as the Forerunners, this “Halo” is worshiped by the Covenant - a sacred artifact they hope will complete their religious quest for supposed transcendence, and they will stop at nothing to control it.

Engaging in fierce combat, Master Chief and Cortana will go deep into the Halo construct and uncover its dark secret and true purpose - even as a monstrous and far more vicious enemy than the Covenant emerges to threaten all sentient life on Halo and the galaxy beyond....

Todd McLaren...

is an amazing narrator! He by far adds the most to any audio book. Has great voices for the characters, seems like he's read ahead to determine the appropriate voice and emotion to add to any dialogue. Would listen to this man narrate the back of a shampoo bottle; He is great.

Well written story

Narrator is clearly getting better. His voice acting gets better the longer the story goes on. Very much improved from the previous book. Writing is more of the same but more descriptive. More names of Covenant, Covenant weapons and Covenant vehicles. If there is one thing holding the story back it is that it gets held back by following the game. Certain events get shoehorned into the story in order to stick to the game timeline but if you not played the games it is not obvious where these events are. Overall good book but voice acting still could improve and it is still an improvement over the previous book.

Good story - bad volume mixing

Great story, and great reading, but the audio mix leave a lot to be desired. Numerous time, the audio goes very quiet - but don't try to turn it up, because next thing you know, its going to be LOUD!

Very goodly written lore of the game HALO: CE

It was kind of hard getting used to and remember all the names through out the story, but I'll give it another listen and get a better understanding the second time around.

Good performance, tedious story.

Narrator has the strong, patriotic tone that was present from The Fall of Reach.

Unfortunately, this book struggles to bridge the gap between the combat sequences that worked so well in the games, but don't necessarily translate so well to a novel.

You'll find yourself bounding through the same, tired action sequences over and over. The Chief also suddenly develops a sense of humor that's a stark difference from the first book (though I'd say that's more of a continuity error with the prequel than this title, given his personality in the games. It's just a bit jarring if you listen back to back).

The Covenant point of view is a welcome addition to the story, and the subtlely altered narration style to differentiate between this new storyline and the human perspective is excellent.

Worth a listen if you're a fan of the series, especially if you're the type to multi-task. While staying relatively faithful to the source material, I found it to be a bit of a slog otherwise.

Halo forever

Love the narrator. Forever in love with the books and the stories we never see in the games
