Description

Days away from completing her first year at Miss Castwell’s Institute for the Magical Instruction of Young Ladies, Changeling-born Sarah Smith might just get away with posing as an upper-class Guardian girl named Cassandra Reed.

But strange visions of a Lightbourne destroyed by Miss Morton’s revenant army keep Sarah from enjoying her achievement. Plus, the Mother Book, Sarah’s one secret advantage and the ultimate entrée in Guardian society, suddenly stops revealing itself to her...putting her in a precarious position with the Guild. On top of all that, her former lady’s maid left Miss Castwell’s, and the new hire is, well, taking some getting used to.

If it weren’t for her two best friends, Alicia McCray and Ivy Cowel, who will do anything to protect her secret, Sarah doesn’t know if she’ll make it another year. When the three girls take summer holiday with Alicia’s family (chaperoned by an exacting and very disapproving Mrs. McCray), a relaxing vacation in Scotland is the last thing they’ll find.

Mrs. Winter is thrilled that Sarah is spending time with the influential McCray family, but Sarah can’t help but feel that her real purpose is to find other Changeling children like her, and free them to realize their own magic. Can she find genuine satisfaction in her accomplishments when she knows there are others like her out there who need her help? Will the three girls uncover the deeply-held secrets they’re looking for in the mysterious mountains of Scotland? Will the Mother Book finally start talking to her again? And will Sarah come to understand the importance of her connection with Ivy and Alicia, and the true nature of her own power...before it’s too late?

Chapters of a book, incomplete and weak.

I really enjoyed the first book. I enjoyed parts of the second however it is incomplete. The ending is not an ending more like an intermission. The last chapters felt cheap considering the rest of the story - did the author lose the plot? Disappointing to the point that I cannot recommend this as a purchase; there are better books out there.

The story overall has merit; Molly Harper please do the work to consistently develop the characters AND the story in sync; there is potential here. Perhaps consider editing this version and completing it? I won't buy another one of your books in this series until I am certain that you have completed the tale AND have strong positive reviews that state the same. I feel ripped off.

spoiler

While the first book was fun, if a bit predictable, this second book is disappointing. Sarah/Cassandra is in a precarious situation but she seems to be blabbing her origin story every time she opens her mouth. This struck me as incredibly stupid even for a teenager. Then there was the ending. What the heck was that? Scooping up a bunch of kidnapped kids and sailing off into the sunset with the intent that three run away teenagers will train, house, and feed them. I don't think so. One of the things I like about the stories is that Mrs. Winter isn't a caricature evil stepmother character, but she ends up acting decidedly odd. Then there was 'the big break-up scene'; I can't say I thought much of that either. I don't think this is a series i can continue.

Good fun follow-up to the 1st, if a bit rushed at times

First of all, I think the narrator for this series, Amanda Ronconi, does an amazing job! She gives each character defined specific voices, sometimes very subtle, others vastly different, but all great.

The story itself was good, very well done at times, but other times, especially towards the end, it seemed quite rushed. I fell in love with the story of little Sarah Smith in the first book, Changeling, and a lot of the more secondary plot points laid out in that book I was hoping to see explored more in this second installment. However, most of those points seemed to get somewhat glossed over for the sake of the major plot line. And throughout the first half of this book, the reader is left wondering what exactly that major plot point really is. Then it just feels like everything that was set up is rushed to get tied up within the last hour. Don’t get me wrong, the book is still good, and fun, and definitely worth the read if you enjoyed Changeling. And I did enjoy this one too, I just feel it could have been fleshed out a little more.

One thing I have to say about Molly Harper, she’s an expert at dialogue, especially when said dialogue expresses friendship between girls, or women. In each of her books I’ve read, she shines in this area. And in this book as well, she does an amazing job with every interaction between Sarah and her two BFFs, Alicia and Ivy.

More Entertaining than anything on the big screen

I am not sure if it was the narration, the story, or both, but I had the most entertaining evening listening to Fledgling. I ate popcorn. I drank soda. I listened and enjoyed.

I will admit that I have read all of Molly Harper's books. I have even listened to them all on audiobook. I have enjoyed them all but this one---just WOW!! There was simple romance. There were great friendships. There was an evil that sent goosebumps up my arms.

Sarah proves you don't have to be the strongest or the brightest to be a heroine. You just need the desire to right a wrong. I can't wait to see what she comes up against next and who will be standing by her side.

A typical Molly Harper

You laugh, you feel for the characters when they are down in the dumps. She writes of hope for a young girls dreams. This book gives you a boost.

Quick sequel

This was a great pallet cleanser for me. I enjoyed the first book, and was excited to see the second had recently come out. Plot is slightly predictable, and Sarah is a stereytipe of the genre. I do love that there are 3 female protagonists (a powerful number), and yes they tall about boys because they're teenagers, but they're also saving the world together. Great feelings of camaraderie will keep me coming back to this series.

ended too early in the story...

great story and I can't wait to get the next book but I feel like this didn't really have the same level of "build up" that the first book had. I would've liked more of that around the ending (no spoilers here! )

Fantasy & Humor For All Ages

Sarah/Cassandra turns 15 amidst a year where she learns more about herself and her magic, strengthens ties with her friends and adopted family, and fights evil.

This is the 2nd volume of Molly Harper's 'Sorcery and Society' series. It's the very best sort of YA book: funny and heartfelt and suitable for every age. I can't wait for the next one!

And of course, Amanda Ronconi is genius!

magic, secrets, mystery and a clever heroine

I recommend listening in the order of release. At just under nine hours these audiobooks are the perfect length. Amanda Ronconi narrates and captures the characters wonderfully as she enhances the suspense and brings this magically world to life through tone and pacing.

In Fledgling, Cassandra is adjusting to her new life and mastering her magic at Miss Castwell’s Institute for the Magical Instruction of Young Ladies. Life is not without problems what with attacks my unicorns, strange visions and the fact that the Mother book isn’t speaking to her. Then there is the problem of her maid and the other Changelings like her.

Fast-paced with plenty of action, magic devices, spells, developments and an odd romance. I loved the tension from fear of discovery to worries about Cassandra’s sister, the other changelings and more. It was an addictive adventure.
