Hope is a sassy & strong lead

If you’re someone who needs a story to seem ‘by the book’ realistic or life-like then you probably won’t like this. But if you want to get into a short cozy with a sassy heroine that you can get lost in (and laugh a bit), then you’ll love it! The lead character intensely interrogates a lot of suspects & while her tactics can be a bit harsh, it gets the job done! Hope is strong, confident & determined to prove her best friends innocence. We could all use a friend like Hope on our side!

Not good

I don't know why I thought that this book would be any better than the first one, Fame is a Killer - I guess that I was hopeful and wanted to give this series a second chance. However, it was just not good.

First off, the main character was not any more likeable in this second book than she was in the first. In fact, I think that she was even worse the second time around as nothing about her changed and it was more of the same irritating personality traits. I mean, how dense was Hope that she didn't realize that people would be angry about being blocked into their driveway and proceed to be 'harassed' by a former actress (with absolutely zero qualifications) about a murder.

Furthermore, I still struggle immensely to believe that Hope Hadley is meant to be in her 40s; she reacts much like a petty teenager. It was weird.

As for the actual plot, I believe the mystery had potential. Nonetheless, there appeared to be large gaps in the narrative; as a reader, it seemed like one moment she goes from solving the mystery to having the mystery solved without any actual explanation into the investigation process.

Finally, in terms of the narrator, I found the narration adequate enough; it wasn’t a groundbreaking performance or anything, but it was not awful either.

Overall, this book was a huge disappointment. I generally love cozy mysteries, but this series has given me headaches from the amount of eye rolling. I suppose if I had to pick any positive in this experience at all, it would be that at least this series makes decent background noise as you don’t have to pay any attention to it at all. I wholeheartedly do not recommend this for reading material.

Hope's on the case...again!

Fishing for a Murderer: Hope Hadley Cozy Mystery Series, Book 2 by Meredith Potts, narrated by Rachel Carr is fun series to follow for lovers of cozies! Enough of the storyline is repeated from Book 1 if you wanted to treat this as a stand-alone. I enjoyed Book 1 enough to purchase the entire series, and I'm sure fans of the genre will feel the same. It is a quick listen at about 3 hours 20 minutes...great for a Saturday afternoon at home or for your drive to and from work. When ex-Hollywood actress Hope Hadley finds herself out of a job, she moves back to Florida, where she is originally from. It is here that she runs an animal shelter. As time goes on, Hope learns from her detective brother, Joe, that her friend/employee, Paige, is the prime suspect in a murder investigation....the murder of Paige's ex-boyfriend, Mark. Not wanting to see her friend go down in flames, Hope takes it upon herself to find the real murderer and clear her friend's name. How hard could it be? C'mon...she has several years of experience as a detective...a detective in a TV series that is...

Rachel Carr's narration definitely added to my enjoyment of this book. I feel she did better in Book 2 than she did in Book 1, and I'm looking forward to hearing more from her in Books 3 & 4! I feel that her interpretation of the plot brings the characters to life. She has great inflection and plays the part of Hope Hadley very well.

Overall, I feel Fishing for a Murderer: Hope Hadley Cozy Mystery Series, Book 2 deserves a rating of 4 stars. While the storyline is engaging and the characters make me chuckle, I think there are parts that could use a little tweeking. I may have noticed this more because I am choosing to listen to one audiobook right after the other, but I felt that there was too much repetition of dialogue and background information from Book 1. In my opinion, there are many ways in which characters can express themselves. However, when the same exact wording (across books) is used in specific instances, it's only a matter of time before it is noticed. I also feel that the background information of Hope's could have been revealed differently to readers/listeners. With the many references and mentions of her past life as an actress, a re-telling of Book 1 isn't necessary. As someone who has already made it through Book 1, this was too repetitive, and those who have chosen to start with Book 2 without reading Book 1 will not have a problem picking up on the fact that Hope was once an actress. Even though this is a fairly short book already, sticking with the idea of "less is more" would turn this book from good to great! Obviously, this is just my personal opinion. I'm looking forward to continuing this series, and I'm headed to my Audible library to download Book 3 right now. Yay!

Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. :-)

Short and full of sass!

Hope Hadley is a character that you cannot help but love! This second installment of her series as an amateur sleuth and it is fun from the very start! When her employee, Paige's ex-boyfriend is found murdered with his own fishing knife, Hope sets out to find the murderer. Her policeman brother, Joe does not want her anywhere near the investigation, but with a strong will and lots of energy, Hope takes on the challenge anyway. Potts has a way of creating characters with larger than life personalities. The story is fun, fast paced and will make you laugh with all the situations Hope finds herself in.

I enjoy the narration by Rachel Carr. Her voice is smooth and very easy to listen to. She has become Hope for me, and am glad she is continuing the series.

DELIGHTFUL COZY MYSTERY

FISHING FOR A MURDERER is the second book in the Hope Hadley Cozy Mysteries. While each will probably stand on its own, it’s probably best to read each in the order of release.

I’ll admit it – I love puns. This story is full of puns, old jokes, and well-handled clichés. It had me smiling, giggling, and belly laughing. Don’t we all need more of that!? Many of them were fish related since the murder victim owned a bait and tackle store. My favorite, when questioning a suspect, was: ‘I had her hook and line. Now I just had to sink her.’

I did have to suspend my understanding of how policemen work and what they – or older brothers – will tolerate. That’s called literary license. Suspend it! Delight in the fun and the sass.

I enjoyed this book and I look forward to listening to more as they are released to audio.

Narration: In the first book, I complained that the narrator was speaking too fast. She has improved already. She is still speaking too fast at times, but overall it is better and I wasn’t driving nervously. Ms. Carr has a pleasant voice and I hope she continues working on her craft.

Note: while I was given this book as a gifted audiobook copy, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Fishing for a Murderer

Hope is back in her hometown and settling in nicely, that is until her new employee is accused of murder by her police officer brother. In true Hope fashion she takes it upon herself to find out who really committed the murder. This is a super fun series and the books are fast listens with great narration.
