Description

The TDF Marco Polo embarks on its maiden voyage outside Earth's solar system, leading to the discovery of an extinct civilization destroyed by orbital bombardment. Deep underground is a mysterious library of alien secrets.

The Terran Republic unravels the clues, forcing its politicians, scientists, navy, and marines to engage in an epic journey of space exploration, space battles, and combat behind enemy lines. They must rally their forces to defend the Earth as they discover The Others are coming.

Enjoyable listening...

What made the experience of listening to Discovery of the Saiph the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed this audio book as the author kept it simple without a lot of filler, but plenty of action. Maybe not for the sophisticated reader, but great for me.

The reader didn't have a great variety in his voice, and the women sounded like men, otherwise his reading was ok.

Good Space Opera

Good light space opera, perfect for making the miles go by on your summer trip. Story is kinda predictable but thats pretty forgivable. The author does conversational material very well, his characters conversations sound believable. Very little florid (Clive Cussler type) verbiage. Big problem with use of language. Confuses "DESTROY" WITH "DECIMATE" with "DEVASTATE". Also, if ;you are going to write science fiction, learn that the plane that the planets rotate around their star is the "ECLIPTIC" not the 'ELIPSIC" . These and other glaring usage mistakes are found throughout the book. Thus three instead of the four stars I would normally have awarded. Looking forward to the sequel although not looking forward to these same usage mistakes. I suspect its way too late to correct them now.

Really great book

Starts off a little slow while they setup the story, however it quickly picks up once they find the Saiph database. Author builds an interesting universe with different alien races and a nemesis race that will have to be faced in future books. A great book! Very much looking forward to books 2 and 3.

Poor Dialog, just bad at times. Couldn't finish it

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Might be better suited for high-schoolers. Or those without a lot of sci-fi/space background.

Has Discovery of the Saiph turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but it's reminded me to be more careful in my selection process.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Performance was "fine", possibly a little flat in his reading but it's hard to tell because the dialog just isn't very good.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Discovery of the Saiph?

I wouldn't have allowed it to be published without a rework on the dialog. I don't feel like he has a sense of what people really would say or think in these situations.

Any additional comments?

If you're age 30+, enjoy Heinlein, Bova, Card, or Bradbury, then you're wasting your time with this book.

I don't normally write reviews and I'm tempted to be scathing with this one but I feel bad about going too negative here. I probably read a lot of books like this when I was younger and didn't notice/care how bad it was. Give this author some more time in the trenches and he may really shine someday.

a fun sci-fi Adventure that tackles a big story

overall it's a fun adventure with a lot of different characters. the only drawback is that there are so many characters. sometimes you would like to develop a little intimacy with fewer characters but a story of this size requires many actors to tell it.

Homogeneous sci-fi

I like the idea, and the story is not that bad. However it lacks more complex intrigues. This book could easily been three books twice it's size. It's all too easy, and the planets act too homogeneous and act too much as a unit. Where's the resistance? Why do noone question the soundness of the operations? I'll still pick up the next volume though. I want to know what happens next!

The story was fast moving with great battles.

Great ideas using fold space and faster then light theory. Great battles while drawing you into the new worlds and species.

Engaging Story

Would you listen to Discovery of the Saiph again? Why?

Yes, I'd enjoy it enough to listen in again in a couple of years. The story moved quickly between the important parts, balancing some character development without spending excessive time on it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The parts with military crews sacrifice themselves for the great good was a little moving, Good to see the good guys dying. Makes the story a bit more 'believable' even if the military discipline seems a bit too perfect.

Worth Listening To

Ok the interactions are a little off and story is rushed. The character build is not complete or believable. The way people are interacting is not realistic in my opinion.
That being said the story and idea's are unique and really interesting. After finishing I immediately ordered the second book.
