Description

New York Times Best Seller

An all-new, official prequel novel to The Battle for Azeroth, Blizzard Entertainment's next expansion to the critically acclaimed World of Warcraft video game.

Azeroth is dying.

The Horde and the Alliance defeated the demonic Burning Legion, but a dire catastrophe is unfolding deep below the surface of the world. There is a mortal wound in the heart of Azeroth, struck by the sword of the fallen titan Sargeras in a final act of cruelty.

For Anduin Wrynn, king of Stormwind, and Sylvanas Windrunner, warchief of the Horde and queen of the Forsaken, there is little time to rebuild what remains and even less to mourn what was lost. Azeroth's devastating wound has revealed a mysterious material known as Azerite. In the right hands, this strange golden substance is capable of incredible feats of creation; in the wrong ones, it could bring forth unthinkable destruction.

As Alliance and Horde forces race to uncover the secrets of Azerite and heal the wounded world, Anduin enacts a desperate plan aimed at forging a lasting peace between the factions. Azerite jeopardizes the balance of power, and so Anduin must gain the trust of Sylvanas. But, as ever, the Dark Lady has her own machinations.

For peace to be possible, generations of bloodshed and hatred must be brought to an end. But there are truths that neither side is willing to accept and ambitions they are loath to relinquish. As Alliance and Horde alike grasp for the Azerite's power, their simmering conflict threatens to reignite all-out war - a war that would spell doom for Azeroth.

Praise for Before the Storm:

“This is easily the best book in the World of Warcraft series, and I don’t say that lightly.... It’s so much more than a tie-in novel.... It’s a beautiful book.” (Blizzard Watch)

Super audiobook. Histoire top

Great narator, not so great story...

70% Mr always perfect-boy king-Anduin, 20% moustache twirling-"morally grey"-evil - sylvanas, 10% "who are they again?" -random characters.

Don't get me wrong, it's enjoyable, but it's a book about anduin, and narated by it's (amazing) voice actor.
The story, even if it has its moments, is far from perfect.

Amazing Experience

This book is just great. It's narrated by King Anduin's voice actor from the game, who performs excellently in every role (except Moira, but I'll give him a pass because the rest were great). Each chapter starts with a minute of music from the in-game location the chapter takes place in. On top of all that, the story is gripping and compelling, with enough background and context added to be enjoyable to players of World of Warcraft and casual readers alike, which is rare in a novel of this type. All in all, a fantastic experience I heartily recommend.

Decent, but flowery writing portrays events poorly

Golden, back again with a new title as a tie in for World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, shows a disappointing lack of ability to repress her writing's linguistic crutches. Depending on her usual favorite phrases or actions to color expressions can sometime lead to some exhaustion on the part of the listener (At no fault of the performer reading her words who was quite excellent and showed much skill in his impressions of various characters.). That said if you are able to push past some of the cheesier dialogue or descriptions the story is fairly decent and well put together. I was hoping for a little tidbit on the battle for Loredaeron but was satisfied with what Golden delivered for a narrative. I was still sad when it ended as these tie-ins usually do, that being on a somewhat inconclusive finally to set the stage for the coming expansion. I hope this doesn't sound too harsh, its just after so long of listening to Golden write, these things become more apparent and one wonders why these issues weren't nipped sooner. Worth a listen if you care about these sorts of things.

Excellent Narration; Mediocre Story

The narrator should be commended for his excellent performance. Golden, however, proves inconsistent with her tone. Warcraft stories have never been burdened by complexity, but the simple themes within this story are disappointing, to be quite candid. Her portrayal of Sylvanas sways been complex and vulnerable for the briefest of moment, then back to to cold and cruel; little more than a generic monstrous villain.

Her portrayal of Anduin is as a generic fantasy hero, impossibly perfect at nearly everything, and nearly worshipped for no reason. A clear case of Mary Sue meeting average skill. Golden has done far better in the past, and should not tout this as one of her best works.

Boring<br />

Narrartion was great. Ending was meh. Over all uneventful story till the very end. Never been a fan of soft characters, which is what the King is written to be. Book is a filler to a greater story(obviously). Would have just liked something greater from a story telling team.

Great narrator, mediocre story

This book is solely designed to set Anduin up. Very little action, pretty dry overall. If you're into WoW lore it's a decent read but otherwise I could have gone without it.

I want my time back.

Don't get me wrong. The book was well written and performed. My issue is that this book was not what I believed it was represented as. I understood that it would add to the lore and storyline. It simply told the story of events that were already revealed.

A whole lot of book for almost zero story progress

Voice acting is great, although I would like to see Anduin's voice change a bit since he is now in his 20's and still sounds like a little boy.

The bad part though is nothing really happens in the book that hasn't already been known. The end scene was basically the only thing new and really you knew it was coming the whole time anyways. Just not a fan of 2 chapters of exposition and then 1 paragraph of substance.

Best Franchise Book I've listened to/read

Christie Golden has really evolved, her writing is now more reminiscent of great Fantasy authors like George R.R. Martin, rather than just being another YA Author writing for big franchises. The story was gripping and beautiful, setting the stage for Battle for Azeroth. Josh Keaton, the actual VA for High King Anduin Wrynn in-game, is a perfect fit narrating the awesome scenes unfolding in this Anduin-centric book, invoking Anduins personality with every minute, while still giving live to other characters, brilliantly voice-acted. This doesn't feel like just another franchise book, but a great novel in it's own right. Even if you don't play WoW, if you are interested in the Lore behind the Warcraft universe, this book is near perfect.

Really enjoyed it

The story was emotional, gripping and interesting. Josh Keaton does a great job performing all these characters. Only thing i disliked was his reading of Sylvannas, it sounded a lot like Littlefinger from Game of Thrones to me.
This book is meant to be the prologue for the upcoming World of Warcraft Expansion Battle for Azeroth. Every fan of the game should give themself the pleasure of this story.

Great wow book

Fills the story between the legion and battle of azheroth. I love the forsaken and Sylvanas and as much as this events concern me and I might disagree, it is wonderful to see them in the center of this story. Anduin is the other main character in this book and with his wonderful personality and open mind it was touching to stand by his side in his maybe fruitless, maybe not, struggles in this book.

Little love for Horde

Mostly focused on Anduin and the Alliance. Would have still loved to hear Sylvanas chapters read by her VA instead - regardless of how few there are.

;) For the Horde!
Sprecher und Geschichte sind gut das Hörbuch im gesamten 4.5 Sterne.

Listen to this if you are into the lore of WoW

The story by itself isn't that spectacular and somehow predictable in the end, but it is a beautifully drawn background picture for the more "epic" story arch of the current WoW-expansion "Battle for Azeroth". Hence only three stars for the story, but still five stars overall since I for myself really enjoyed listening to it.
