Beth is devastated to return to find her home practically burnt to the ground, although thankful to the group of Amish men and women who risked their lives to save a few of her possessions, as well as her cat. With no family of her own, and very little money saved, Beth is grateful to accept the help of the nearby Amish family who welcome her into their home.
The oldest son, Michael, is part of the Amish building team who have offered to help rebuild her home for as little a cost as possible. She grows closer to Michael and feels the love and generosity of the Amish community. The simplicity of life is something Beth finds appealing, though very different from the modern conveniences she is used to. When Beth is offered the job of a lifetime, she has to decide between becoming Amish or following her career.
