    Description

The Instant New York Times Best Seller from the Number One New York Times Best-Selling Author of People We Meet on Vacation

“Original, sparkling bright, and layered with feeling.” (Sally Thorne, author of The Hating Game)

A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

    They’re polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

    Romantic

If you're looking for a well-written, romantic, entertaining story, this is the one. Smooth, easy listening, witty, positive, and uplifting. Be ready for a couple of hot sex scenes. Whelan is an excellent narrator, I'm a big fan (she's one of the reasons I came across this book).

    Awfully boring

Very boring. I don't understand why some reviewers say that this is funny - I feel there is a mistake somewhere.

    Phenomenal Storytelling... with a caveat

The story was beautiful, heart wrenching, and fully identifiable. It was funny, sharp, and poignant. Narration, well done.

The only reason I gave the “overall” category 4 stars was due to the sex scenes I wish would have been fade-to-black/closed-door. I assumed the earlier “interruptions” to passionate moments meant the story WOULD fade out when sex was nigh, and when it didn’t—well... just not my thing.

That being said... the first sex scene—the only one I listened to entirely—while too graphic for my personal reading/listening preferences was... (relatively) tasteful-ish. *cringe*

In my opinion, the on-scene sex scenes were... unnecessary—at least in the breadth and scope in which they were written. This author is amazing, and I have no doubt she could have portrayed the same tender passion without that vivid content. In my opinion (take it or leave it, because everyone has their own threshold) the admittedly excellent story would have been, if not STRONGER, of equal strength and beauty without that level of descriptive physical intimacy on the page. I was grateful for the 30 second jump-ahead feature when the subsequent rounds began, and used it. But dang... I had to push that button a lot to get to the other side!

Please note: This is a phenomenally well-told story, with fully realized characters that made me laugh and made me ache. I *will* likely read or listen to it again, skimming over or skipping through the things I do not wish to read/hear... now that I know where they are.

I hate having to selectively withhold my recommendation of such an otherwise brilliant book like this, or having to mention a content warning to certain people/audiences who would otherwise love the story but for the scope of the portrayal of physical intimacy. But... I will. Reading preferences are subjective, and some content can shock those not ready for it.

    Love the narrator...not the story

The reader does an excellent job! The storyline is good. The actual story is annoying. If this book were a drinking game, everyone would be dead after reading/listening to it. Take a drink every time the main character cries. Then, take a drink every time the character's name, January, is used in the story. Those two repetitive things took away from the story for me. January (oops, take a drink) is a grown woman who can't stop crying. There, you read the book.

    Formulaic

If you like books with obvious, self-centered first-person narrator's, this one is for you.

If you want a lesson on how NOT to follow the "Save the Cat" storytelling formula, this one is for you.

LOVE this book, and my favorite narrator!!

Julia Whelan is my favorite audiobook narrator, and I have been anticipating this book eagerly, so I was thrilled to see that she was cast as narrator! Flawless as usual. As for the story and prose, I LOVED it all. I am admittedly a sucker for a love story, but the rawness and sly complexity in this one truly took it to another level for me. And all of the clever, witty banter a girl could hope for. I will absolutely read and listen to this book again and again over the course of my life, and I rarely say that about a book. Only a few select stories and series hold that kind of place in my heart. It feels like a cup of really great hot cocoa in a house by a lake on a rainy day; the rom com you watch over and over and over. Highly recommend.

    Worth your time

I didn’t read the reviews (as I usually do) before selecting this book. And I’m glad I didn’t. The 3 stars and below reviews are usually what I skim through. Well I have to totally disagree with any negative points of view regarding this story or the narrator. This audiobook made me laugh & cry - at one point I even had to pause the story so I wouldn’t cry in front of my husband who was sitting beside me watching the 6 o’clock news. I was totally caught up in the characters and story and my heart was breaking for January. I really enjoyed this book and you probably will too.

    4 Stars

Beach Read fit nicely within my favorite reading genre - women's fic with romance, drama, wit, and swoon. Was it perfect? No. Was it perfect for me? For the most part.

Gus was my favorite type of hero and he was deliciously battered and jaded. I struggled a little more with January and I honestly couldn’t tell if it was the audio narrator’s interpretation or my own pickiness. She did seem to improve after I quit the audio, but that could be coincidental to where I was in the character’s story arc. There were some predictable elements to the romance, but it didn't negate the swoon factor that built to a crescendo in the middle of the second half. Major swoon. The author nailed the tender and sweet dialogue, descriptions, and sensuality between the two as they ventured from friends to more. The overall story weaved in and out of light and melodramatic, but with nicely written transitions that created a believable second chance romance.

    Disappointed

This sounded like it would be a fun summer-type read, but it wasn't. In places there is witty dialogue, but too often it is overshadowed by the despair both characters have let rule their lives.

    Love the book

I devoured this book. I think the character growth, romance, and backstory really made the book come to life. This is my first time with one of Allie Henry’s books but it will not be my last.

    Amazing!

I so loved this book! What a great story, you fall in love with the characters immediately. The narrator told the story so wonderful, I laughed out loud and I cried and was so deeply touched. For me this is a story about love, but not only between two persons, but about living life to the fullest, and daring to love to the fullest. And about the love we have for our parents. And of course about the love of books, both writing and reading. Which makes it perfect. Thank you for this book. I am so very grateful.

    GANZ anders

    alle Beschreibungen klingen nach RomKom.
    Aber das ist es nicht.
    Nicht wirklich.
    Viel tiefer.
    Viel dunkler.
    Gaaaanz anders.

UND: das Ende ist anders als im Buch.

Ich weiß nicht, ob ich DAS so gut finde ...

    It was great! :)

I started the audiobook Friday after work and finished it Saturday evening. I had my earphones in nearly all the time and did everything while listening to the story. Cooking, cleaning, Shopping... You name it.
The voice of the speaker is nice to listen to and she really did a great job here.
The story does not focus as much on the romance as the description might suggest and I really liked that aspect since I hoped it wouldn't be to cheesy. But the story focuses more on the development of the characters and how your environment makes you into the person you are. I really loved this aspect and therefor I give 5 stars for the story. Although I mentioned that there is not too much romance we get a nice love story, great dialogues and chemistry between the characters and brilliant insides on how communication can be difficult sometimes.
All in all I really enjoyed listening to it. :)

    Not my book...

Ok, so I havn't written a review in years. But I feel like I have to now. First of all, a warning about possible Spoilers. I don't mean to give too much away but my reasons for not liking this book are because of the story and the writing, so I may have to get into the plot a bit. At the moment, I tend to only listen to Rom-Coms, because they are usually light and funny, sweet and sometimes swoon-worthy. So when I searched for a new book and/or author, I've gone through the recommendations from Amazon due to the books I've ordered before. And everywhere I looked, I've always stumbled over this new writer Emily Henry and her books that everyone and their dogs were talking about. So I got the book of hers with the most positive reviews. Overhyped books tend to be a hit or miss for me but in the last months, I usually had Hits. I went into this book a few of my favorite authors recommended even before you get to read the description on the sales-page, so what the heck, right?! Sadly, this was a total miss for me. Whereas others describe it as a 'breath of fresh air' and other similar praises, I started to feel my excitement for this story fizzle out of me at about 2 hours into it. The only time I actually smiled a bit (not even laughed) was, when the female lead thought about her best friend and her driving skills, or lack thereof. Now, the story was anything but a light 'Beach Read', like the title would suggest. Both MC's were obviously in crisis mode from start to finish. It seemed like they always had to talk about the most depressing subjects in their lives. It didn't matter what the setting, whenever one of them seemed to improve the mood, the other usually went and nubbed it in the bud. At a certain point of repeat occurence of this unfortunate phenomenon, I almost hoped they would stay as far away from each other as possible. This lead to a lack in chemistry IMO. They started touching each other and kissing, whenever it got to a point where they might find a solution for their dilemmas. But no, to me it felt like they only touched as a distraction. And until well into 2/3 of the book, they ALWAYS seemed to fight after this pattern. Then it's wash, rinse, repeat. That has gotten so exhausting to me, that I had to skip to the last chapter to find out about the ending. As much as I tried to keep an open mind, I just couldn't bring myself to keep on listening. Plus, it didn't feel like a romance to me AT ALL - it was rather a culmination of all of their problems and the two MC's finding themselfes in the same proximity by default. All this internal monologue, jammering on and on about stuff like divorce, death of parents, past domestic violence - and as a 'bonus' the sad tale about survivors of a cult thrown in, because the rest of the stuff wasn't depressing enough - everything else in this book (secondary characters, the surroundings, the 'humor'...) had been overshadowed by this heavy struggle of the two leads. At certain points it felt more like a meeting of my psychotherapy group than a romance novel. And that's just not what I personally want out of certain genres I read! I really feel like I was mislead and honestly regret giving this book a try. As for the writing style of author Emily Henry, I think she's not a bad writer, but she seemed to drift off at some poignant parts of the book. Whenever there was the potential for 'more', her characters seemed to get lost in the same monologues in their heads, over and over again. Then the repetitive description of the male lead's "crooked mouth", for example. After mainly hearing him described as 'Gus with the crooked smile/lips/mouth', I started picturing a figure in an abstract painting. If that was supposed to make the obviously grouchy mMC more approachable, it didn't work with me. So, to sum it all up, I gave up on the book 2 thirds of the story in because the writing gave me whiplash and the characters depressed me. And I rooted for them to rather find help for their past trauma, rather than get together. And THAT is something I havn't thought about two people in books for approx. 500+ reads. Make of it what you wish.

The narrator did an excellent job, BTW. I liked listening to her voice. So, 5 Stars for narration and sadly only 1,5 Stars for the book itself. But obviously I'm in the minority here - just wanted to give an honest opinion from the viewpoint of someone who didn't love the story.

    Pretty predictable

My expectations of a lighter, well written and entertaining book weren‘t really fulfilled: I really disliked the main characters- cardboard cutout tortured artist and spoiled, whiny heroine. This of course is a matter of taste- but still, the whole thing seemed a lot more superficial and stereotypical than it needed to be…

The first audio fiction book I have listened to twice...

.... ever? The second round, I appreciated the language even more and the way, the author described feelings and emotions. And I got even more annoyed by the moralistic tone the protagonist judges her fathers affair. Besides that, it was an entertaining and heartwarming book. It made me cry and laugh and it is beautiful written and told.
