    Description

"I gulped down Ballistic in one long read, staying awake half the night, and now I want the next one!" (George R. R. Martin)

There is a personal price to pay for having aligned with the wrong side in a reckless war. For Aden Jansen it's the need to adopt a new identity while keeping his past hidden. Now he's integrated himself aboard the Zephyr, a merchant ship smuggling critical goods through dangerous space. But danger is imminent on planet Gretia, as well. Under occupation, torn between postwar reformers and loyalists, it's a polestar for civil unrest.

Meanwhile an occupation forces officer is pulled right back into the fray when the battle alarm is raised, an ambitious heiress is entangled in a subversive political conspiracy, and an Allied captain is about to meet the enemy head-on.

As Aden discovers, the insurgents on Gretia - and in space - are connected, organized, and ready to break into full-scale rebellion. History is threatening to repeat itself. It's time that Aden rediscovers who he is, whom he can trust, and what he must fight for now.

    What happened to Luke Daniels?

I was excited to start listening to this book as all of Marko Kloos's stories are amazing, and Luke Daniels dynamic narrations bring Marko's books to life for me. This new guy uses the same monotone "let me tell you a dark secret" type of voice across all the characters in all situations. Listening to this is like storytime in prison. Please bring back Luke, or Mark Boyett, or RC Bray for the next in the series. You can use the current narrator as the bad guy in some other series.

    You can’t change narrators

A narrator can make or break it, and with them changing midstream in the series that doesn’t help at all. The story in this series unfortunately seems to end at weird points. I really like this author’s frontline series. But in this case we have to many moving parts and the overall story suffers for it.

Well written good characterization, but uneventful

The headline kinda sums things up. Marko Kloos is a gifted writer and his characters are deep and interesting. However the story is... pretty empty. The first entry in this series was a good setup to the intrigue and mystery. The second entry should start to unravel the conspiracies. Only one major event happens and the major characters have little interaction with it. It doesn't really change their lives or outlook. The story also seems... short, even though it's 9+ hours long. Very little changes for the major characters from book 1.

I feel like this book is Palladium wars Book 1.5.

Should be the end of Book 1

I’m enjoying this series, my only complaint is this should be the end of book 1. And I really hope that book 3 is a complete book.

    Changed Narrator, Hard to Listen

Kloos writes a great story, but this narration is difficult to listen to, the narrator speaks at a sonic level well below a normal speaking voice, kind of like a kid trying to mimic his father, so totally unnatural. The Australian accents used sound very unnatural, the phrasing..it’s just not an enjoyable listen. I got in 15 minutes before I couldn’t listen.

Granted, it’s a bad idea to put someone new in a series, especially when it’s started with Luke Daniels, but I don’t think they even auditioned the new guy. It CAN be done, but this time wasn’t done right.

So, I’m going to return. Anyone reading this far, make sure you download a sample before committing.

I gave the story 4, perhaps it’s a 5, the first in series was, but I couldn’t listen.

    DOWNLOAD THE SAMPLE FIRST.

    Luke Daniels

It would’ve been nice to keep the consistency of having Luke Daniels as the narrator. He brought the different characters hailed from different planets alive. It was jarring to have someone else who was pretty monotone throughout the story and didn’t really distinct themselves with each character.

great story great job by Angelo

Great story i was expecting to drop the story after Luke Daniel's was unable to continue the series. Angelo Di Loreto was able to fill in and make it his own. Can't wait enough for book 3

Loved the first book. Couldn't finish 2nd.

I gave up on this only because I couldn't take the narrator. Book 1 was great but I usually don't tolerate narrator changes and that was the case with book 2. I love Marko Kloos' writing so this is one I will have to actually read.

The change in Narrator is jarring and unwelcome

I just couldn't get past having a different narrator from the first book in the series to this one. Once I have the character voices and accents in my head I just don't enjoy having to re-learn what everyone sounds like.

I'm just going to read this one.

The “Dark Secret voice” wasn’t bad at all!

The performer of the first book was better, but only a tad. This one grew on me after a couple of chapters, and he did the German accents subtly well.
    Listen at 1.2x.

Kloos has a winner, here. I give a damn about the multi-plot arcs in this space-kablooey novel.

I mean... it’s not as awesome as the procedural that WE ALL WANT TO SEE involving Colonial Space Constable Guest from his Frontlines series, but it’s pretty good.

Just wish there was more of this.

Both Aftershocks and Ballistic seem to end rather abruptly. But the story is great and feels very serious. The only regret i got about this is buying both on release date, amd then having to wait for more releases.
