À propos de ce contenu audio
Twenty-six days into his first job as a sleeping-car attendant, Tom Fenwick learns that the worst night of his life can begin with perfect silence. At two in the morning on Friday the thirteenth of February, 1931, the overnight sleeper to the Scottish Highlands runs headlong into a snowdrift and stops dead. Ten minutes later Tom opens compartment four and finds its wealthy passenger on the floor, behind a door locked from the inside, with the key still in his own pocket.
Seven passengers share Sleeper Car Seven, and every one of them is hiding something: a retired colonel with an old grudge, a cheerful dancing-school teacher, a nervous clergyman, a sharp-tongued widow, a young heir with debts, a quiet Edinburgh solicitor, and a woman traveling under a name that is not hers. There is no way out, no help for hours, and only one other person aboard who believes this was no accident.
Dame Hester Quill, a formidable retired codebreaker with a bad hip and a better memory, enlists Tom as her legs and ears. Between them they have a bell-pull log, a rota of hot-water cans, a lock that turns once or twice, a singing kettle, a drift of snow, and one long night to work out who did it, and how. Every clue is laid out in plain sight, if you listen closely.
Warm, witty and fair to the listener, this is a classic puzzle told by a young man who writes everything down and understands only half of it until it matters. Bring a blanket.
A Golden Age style historical mystery with a locked-room puzzle.
