Jacob Settle is the loneliest man in the village: a quiet labourer who lives alone in a hut on the edge of the moor, who flinches from company and never smiles. The narrator, who has befriended him, finds him one night shaking from a dream he will not describe.
At last Settle tells it. There was a quarrel years ago, a man dead at his feet, and a thing he did with his hands that he has never confessed to anyone. Every night since, the dream comes back the same way, and he knows that it means heaven is closed to him. Then a boiler explodes at the pit, and Settle is given one chance to answer the dream.
First published in 1894, A Dream of Red Hands is one of Bram Stoker’s most moving short stories: a tale of guilt, nightmare and redemption from the author of Dracula, closer to tragedy than to terror.
Listen to the complete, unabridged audiobook of this classic Victorian story.
