Return to the world of the Liveships Traders and journey along the Rain Wild River in the third instalment of high adventure from the author of the internationally acclaimed Farseer trilogy. Kelsingra waits for those brave enough to enter… The dragons and their keepers have discovered Kelsingra but so far only Heeby has succeeded in flying over the river to enter the fabled city. The other dragons, with their deformed wings and feeble muscles, are afraid to risk failure and humiliation.
Description
The first volume in Robin Hobb’s internationally best-selling Farseer series.
In a faraway land where members of the royal family are named for the virtues they embody, one young boy will become a walking enigma. Born on the wrong side of the sheets, Fitz, son of Chilvary Farseer, is a royal bastard, cast out into the world, friendless and lonely.
Only his magical link with animals - the old art known as the Wit - gives him solace and companionship. But the Wit, if used too often, is a perilous magic, and one abhorred by the nobility. So when Fitz is finally adopted into the royal household, he must give up his old ways and embrace a new life of weaponry, scribbing, courtly manners, and how to kill a man secretly, as he trains to become a royal assassin.

Not the best
I had a hard time getting into the story and it took me months to finish it. The narrator's style might be the reason. Sou'd is not great, sometimes it goes low and I thought tbat it was the end of a sentence or chapter, but no, just the volume fluctuating. Very off-putting.
Overall, I didn't enjoy it enough to purchase book 2.

A really good beginning for a trilogy
The story was really amazing and after a few chapter, I couldn't stop listening to it! I'm looking forward to begin the second book of this trilogy.
Moreover, the performance was generally good, but as someone whose mother tongue is not English, it was sometimes harder to follow. I got sometimes confused about the names and I had to rewind the story a few times. I would still recommend the book a 100% even if your mother tongue is not English, because the story is really amazing !

Robin hobb did u pick this narrator?
Read a hard copy some years ago-wonderful rich enchanting. But I really hope robin hobb rethinks the narrator....grating, classist and way to refined and constricted to create the variation in voices this story deserved😢

No silver lining
If you like 'one man beats all' type of stories, this is not for you.
There's misery and no silver lining behind the clouds. Only more misery.
This book was recommended on a Reddit thread for people who like 'The name of the Wind' and 'The Lies of Locke Lamora'.
Now these 2 books are simply brilliant. These stories have depth and wit.
For this book though, it feels like the whole book is an intro to some climax that never comes.
Perhaps in the following books but I'm out.
For the narrator: it is like every last word of every sentence is faded out.
The intonation feels often off.
I don't understand why this book is so highly recommended.
I miss locke lamora which made me laugh out loud, stopped my heart from beating, had me full of wonder.

Superb story, excelent narration
This book has everything: adventures, captivating storyline, rich personalities, no white and black separation, just grayzones everythere. Almost always you are left to judge if something is moral or not, mostly you are left only wondering if you could make decision in those many unpleasant circumstances.
I like the book when i can believe in the story. Almost in every book ilike i find some spot which i think was to naive/silly etc. But in this book those are very few (nose story for example was too stretched).
I found in comments that narration was bad. But in my opinion it was very good, as non-native english 'listener' i found narrator very easy to follow and enjoyed my time. in some other audiobooks i have to adapt to narrator very long time.

Good story, disappointing performance.
It actually took me a while to be brave enough to purchase this book. Many friends have recommended me Robin Hobb's work but when I listened to the samples I just didn't think I could bear the narration.
I normally prefer books narrated with a British presenter, but as this book is written in a first person style the performance is spoken in a horrible upper-class English accent. H's are dropped ehverywhhere (!). Which is a shame because most of the other characters in this book are performed quite well and that's actually what makes the book ok to listen to.
The story is solid. A growing-up up story for the most part about a boy making his way in court as a royal bastard. And a few little adventures with a bit of court intrigue at the end. You can tell the author is just setting the scene for what's to come.
It's well written and the characters are multi-dimensional and interesting. Overall I enjoyed it - yes would have been better with a different narrator but it didn't completely ruin it for me.

A fun fantasy romp, but don't expect too much
What made the experience of listening to Assassin’s Apprentice the most enjoyable?
Good story, you care about the character
Any additional comments?
I did like the story overall, I liked and cared about the character and liked that he wasn't perfect and made mistakes on occasion. While its all very well to find out you're actually a prince (you find this out in the first paragraph, so its not a spoiler) its another to find that being a prince, and especially a bastard prince, is not all its cracked up to be. Everyone wants to use the hero for something, or dislikes him for reasons that have nothing to do with his own actions.
The narrator's accent on some words jerked me out of the story on occasion. It's also written in the first person, which I don't usually like but as there is a lot of head stuff (both emotional, and magical/mind powers) happening I can see why it was chosen. The style is a bit dated, I think these days it would be edited so it was a tighter story and moved along a little quicker. As it is there are some slow parts that don't need to be slow and just drag the story.

Beware of the second book!
This book might be ok, but if you are similar to me, than be warned of the second book of the trilogy.
If you have problems like me, with stupid characters that just do because they have no other choice and all is governd by stupidity with no sense behind. People just believing every little shit without thinking. Main characters constantly self doubting. Every other character acting like knowing everything but doing nothing and just watching. If you are like me, then welcome for hours of pain!
And all that is set in a tiny unimaginative world!
So you are warned!

Stunning story alongside a stunning voice
From beginning to end engaging, I found myself longing to listen to it whenever I was not. The story is unpredictable in the best way possible. The characters steal my heart and then break it. And the performance of Paul Boehmer draws you in with each word, the personality he gives his words is incredible without being over the top.

Grauenhaft schlechter Sprecher

Good book, lousy reader
Haben Sie die Zeit genossen, in der Sie dieses Hörbuch gehört haben? Warum oder warum nicht?
The story is okay, but Paul Boehmers reading is not. He tries so hard to mimic an English accent that it is hard to ignore him and focus on the story. His "white" starts with a H which seems to last for 10 seconds. I would have had no problem with an American accent.
Welches andere Buch würden Sie mit Assassin's Apprentice vergleichen? Warum?
Lies of Locke Lamora
Wen hätten Sie anstatt Paul Boehmer als Erzähler vorgeschlagen?
Steven Pacey, Michael Kramer or Rupert Degas. Until now all readers were fine.
Hat Assassin's Apprentice Sie zu etwas Bestimmtem inspiriert?
No

Deeply awful narrator
Wanted to give this trilogy a shot, which was however immediately halted after listening to the narrator for about 2 minutes.
I genuinely had to check if it was a human speaking or simply a text-to-speech bot.
No way that I will be listening to this for 17 hours.
It’s a shame, but this is not recommendable whatsoever…

great
Amazing book, especially the climax is masterful. it also pulls no punches, can be harsh.

Audio errors throughout
Narration keeps skipping between two audio timelines. Impossible to follow the story, and definitely a bug.
Refund required.

Lieblingsfantasybuch, sehe lebendig gesprochen

Much better than I had expected by far.
There are many stores that follow young boys that must grow up facing hardship. But this one sucked me in and took me on a journey that made me find myself wanting to here the next part. The only problem was that the speed of my house chores took a dive as I paused so often to listen.

great book, mediocre audio quality
Great book, but the audio recording is not done well. the narrators voice is not very clear so I needed to turn up the volume a lot compared to other Titels. I did get used to his style of reading after some hours.

Awfull quality, had to stop after 30mim
The quality of the recording is terrible. I had to stop after 30 minutes so can't even rate the book itself unfortunately. It sounds like someone would turn the volume up and down nonstop with 1-2 levels. 1 word louder, the next lower, would like to get my credit back for this...

Good start - curious for more
A good coming of age story in an interesting fantasy setting, well written and acted. I look forward to the next book.
