Description

The first volume in Robin Hobb’s internationally best-selling Farseer series.

In a faraway land where members of the royal family are named for the virtues they embody, one young boy will become a walking enigma. Born on the wrong side of the sheets, Fitz, son of Chilvary Farseer, is a royal bastard, cast out into the world, friendless and lonely.

Only his magical link with animals - the old art known as the Wit - gives him solace and companionship. But the Wit, if used too often, is a perilous magic, and one abhorred by the nobility. So when Fitz is finally adopted into the royal household, he must give up his old ways and embrace a new life of weaponry, scribbing, courtly manners, and how to kill a man secretly, as he trains to become a royal assassin.

Critiques

“Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers … what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics.” ( The Times)
“In today’s crowded fantasy market Robin Hobb’s books are like diamonds in a sea of zircons” (George R. R. Martin)

Good story, disappointing performance.

It actually took me a while to be brave enough to purchase this book. Many friends have recommended me Robin Hobb's work but when I listened to the samples I just didn't think I could bear the narration.
I normally prefer books narrated with a British presenter, but as this book is written in a first person style the performance is spoken in a horrible upper-class English accent. H's are dropped ehverywhhere (!). Which is a shame because most of the other characters in this book are performed quite well and that's actually what makes the book ok to listen to.
The story is solid. A growing-up up story for the most part about a boy making his way in court as a royal bastard. And a few little adventures with a bit of court intrigue at the end. You can tell the author is just setting the scene for what's to come.
It's well written and the characters are multi-dimensional and interesting. Overall I enjoyed it - yes would have been better with a different narrator but it didn't completely ruin it for me.

Robin hobb did u pick this narrator?

Read a hard copy some years ago-wonderful rich enchanting. But I really hope robin hobb rethinks the narrator....grating, classist and way to refined and constricted to create the variation in voices this story deserved😢

Great start of Realms of the Elderlings trilogies

I read the Liveship Trader trilogy about 25 years ago and was mightily impressed by Hobb's writing. Now I've finally returned to this author with part 1 of the Farseer trilogy, and even though these books are even older than the Liveship series, I'm still swepped off of my feet. What a ride, this is how it's done.

I'll definitely finish the trilogy, will probably continue on with the Liveship Traders (in audio format this time) and will finish with the third trilogy in that same universe, The Tawny Man trilogy, with which we'll return to the Farseer protagonist. Can't wait, even though it'll probably take me a year or so to finish all of them!

Highly recommend.

Superb story, excelent narration

This book has everything: adventures, captivating storyline, rich personalities, no white and black separation, just grayzones everythere. Almost always you are left to judge if something is moral or not, mostly you are left only wondering if you could make decision in those many unpleasant circumstances.
I like the book when i can believe in the story. Almost in every book ilike i find some spot which i think was to naive/silly etc. But in this book those are very few (nose story for example was too stretched).
I found in comments that narration was bad. But in my opinion it was very good, as non-native english 'listener' i found narrator very easy to follow and enjoyed my time. in some other audiobooks i have to adapt to narrator very long time.

Good audio book, enjoyed it

In spite of other reviewers I thought the narrator did a good job. The story was good and involving.

If you are a dog person, then this book will have a bigger significance to you. I enjoyed it fully and it ended with a lot of emotion. Certainly recommended

Great story narration leaves some to be desired

The narration has some pretty glaring issues with the sound level, sometimes the narration fades off so much that it is impossible to hear just to be restored when I have turned the volume up. Sometimes it seems to coincide with the characters whispering, but I feel that it is a poor production that leves me fiddling with the volume because the characters are whispering.
On a more subjective note I find the narration overly shakespearian(is that a word?) creating a wall between me and the events of the story, I feel very much like I'm being told a bedtime story by captain Picard and not so much as I am part of the action. Which does in some way make sense for the way the book is written but still it is not a perfect fit for me.

Gripping story, very slow reader

Excellent book, loved the story and characters. Some heartbreaking twists. Beautiful vocabulary. Believable dialogues and motivations. World building is a bit sparce. VERY... SLOW... NARRATOR... Had to listen on 1.5 speed, otherwise was put to sleep in 10 minutes :)

Will get the rest of the books by this author.

Good story and narrator

Liked the story, finished the book rather quickly. People seem to complain about the narrator, but I cant say that I agree. At some points every now and then he seems to not pause when it seems he should've, but other than that I find his narration good.

Dull at the beginning better towards the end

This book was quite boring for the first half but still a good piece of writing. When compared to other books from the genre the action unfolds slowly. A good book for long nights.

Good book, lousy reader

Haben Sie die Zeit genossen, in der Sie dieses Hörbuch gehört haben? Warum oder warum nicht?

The story is okay, but Paul Boehmers reading is not. He tries so hard to mimic an English accent that it is hard to ignore him and focus on the story. His "white" starts with a H which seems to last for 10 seconds. I would have had no problem with an American accent.

Welches andere Buch würden Sie mit Assassin's Apprentice vergleichen? Warum?

Lies of Locke Lamora

Wen hätten Sie anstatt Paul Boehmer als Erzähler vorgeschlagen?

Steven Pacey, Michael Kramer or Rupert Degas. Until now all readers were fine.

Hat Assassin's Apprentice Sie zu etwas Bestimmtem inspiriert?

No

Grauenhaft schlechter Sprecher

Much better than I had expected by far.

There are many stores that follow young boys that must grow up facing hardship. But this one sucked me in and took me on a journey that made me find myself wanting to here the next part. The only problem was that the speed of my house chores took a dive as I paused so often to listen.

What a wonderful story

This is my first Robin Hobb book and I must say that I enjoyed it and can't wait to start on the second book of the series.
This sort of plot reminds and the style of writing reminds me of Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series.

I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!

It could have been good

I listened to this trilogy and liked it at first. The world Fitz did grew up in, his secret ability, his training as an assassin. It really could have become a great story. But in the end it didn't. Sure it does have an end, but Fitz retires in his twenties and calls himself old. Hobb lets him act like an idiot most of the time. The only reasonable charakters in this story are some of the women. I love good Fantasy and good stories an have read hundreds of them, the longer-the better, but this one is disapointing. So don't even start waisting your time with this one. Read "the sword of truth" from Terry Goodkind or "the name of the wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. I'm giving 2 Stars for the promising Idea of this story
