Description

With just one step, 16-year-old Alex Jennings' world changes - literally.

Dreading her first day at a new school, Alex is stunned when she walks through a doorway and finds herself stranded in Medora, a fantasy world full of impossibilities.

Desperate to return home, she learns that only Professor Marselle can help her...but he's missing. While waiting for him to reappear, Alex attends Akarnae Academy, Medora's boarding school for teenagers with extraordinary gifts. She soon starts to enjoy her bizarre new world and the friends who embrace her as one of their own, but strange things are happening at Akarnae, and Alex can't ignore her fear that something unexpected...something sinister...is looming.

An unwilling pawn in a deadly game, Alex's shoulders bear the crushing weight of an entire race's survival. Only she can save the Medorans, but what if doing so prevents her from ever returning home?

Will Alex risk her entire world - and maybe even her life - to save Medora?

Lord, what a mishmash

I was really hoping for a good new addition to the YA genre. This really is not it. It feels like it was written by a teenager, although the author did a study academic writing, whatever that may be. Apparently there are six installments in this series – I struggled to get to the end of the first, and I can only hope for those who go on that the there are fewer gaping plot holes, massively telegraphed “twists”, completely unbelievable fighting/athletic endeavors, and truly awful dialogue. I I know that the explosion of fantasy YA makes it hard to come up with a written journal ideas, but surely we can do better than this. Sylvian Neuvel for example?

The best story of its kind. A perfect fantasy.

I was referred to this story by another fan of a similar premissed book series. I am grateful, because for as far as I have read this story is perfect in all the ways the other is not. No twisted and unbelievable projections on human sexuality, no unnecessary crude language, and no assumption that all evil antagonists have to be entirely uncivil and at least partly insane. This story suggests that we can experience the fantastical along with it's risks without abandoning our limited yet full of purpose world. This story is so much more true about humanity and possibility than any reader might normally expect.

Could not make it past the first few chapters

I understand the baseline plot of the book, however...the MC is just too accepting and stupid for me to continue. The technology and magic baseline is poorly done. I started to skip chapters hoping that things would get better, but they didn't.
