Description

Power, privilege, and the rigid rules of class leave two hearts yearning for connection in the sizzling new Society of Gentlemen novel from K. J. Charles.

Among his eccentric though strictly principled group of friends, Lord Richard Vane is the confidant on whom everyone depends for advice, moral rectitude, and discreet assistance. Yet when Richard has a problem, he turns to his valet, a fixer of unparalleled genius - and the object of Richard's deepest desires. If there is one rule a gentleman must follow, it is never to dally with servants. But when David is close enough to touch, the rules of class collide with the basest sort of animal instinct: overpowering lust.

For David Cyprian, burglary and blackmail are as much in a day's work as bootblacking - anything for the man he's devoted to. But the one thing he wants for himself is the one thing Richard refuses to give: his heart. With the tension between them growing to be unbearable, David's seemingly incorruptible master has left him no choice. Putting his finely honed skills of seduction and manipulation to good use, he will convince Richard to forget all about his well-meaning objections and give in to sweet, sinful temptation.

Commentaires

"This book is swoon material - grab it!" ( Red Adept Reviews)
"What I enjoyed most about this book was the author's slow and deliberate reveal of the story from both parties' perspectives." ( The Oddness of Moving Things)
"I absolutely loved this book. It was well written, it kept me engaged all the way throughout, and it was so good that I one-clicked the others in the series without even looking at the blurbs. I can safely say that this is one author that I will be reading more of in the future. If you love Regency era-romance and books that really tug on your heart, this is definitely one to check out." Superlative Conclusion

Where does A Gentleman's Position rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Easily in the Top Five. Actually, in order to keep my top five from being taken up by the three books in this series, I include them as a group. They are all extraordinary, but this one is tremendous.

What did you like best about this story?

The absolute usurpation of various tropes and expectations based on the appearance and status of the characters. Charles always has a strong command of sexual negotiation and politics, but watching two intrinsically Alpha personalities with extremely different psychological expressions find common ground is incredible. Humanizing Richard in particular who has been more of an entity than a person presiding over the Ricardians, is a genuine triumph.

Have you listened to any of Matthew Lloyd Davies’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

His work on this series of books has been absolutely outstanding. His commitment and delivery are impeccable, making everything from seditous politics, printmaking, to sex vivid and immensely enjoyable to listen to.

Loved it!

Wow! I'm really at a loss for words. I just loved everything about this and Richard is redeemed. It wasn't anything like I expected and Richard had better never get on his fox's bad side or he is in big trouble.

My love for Silas is unending. I love that man. He had some great scenes in this book.

Matthew Lloyd Davies has become my favorite British narrators. I highly recommend this whole series!

Sad To See The Series End

Another winner. The narrator does a great job, although I can't say I cared much for how he reads Ash. Ash has appeared in the prior books, but I don't recall him 'speaking' with a slight lisp as he does in this book. Other than that, all the characters were done quite well.

The author also does a great job with the plot. It doesn't seem plausible at first, with what we know of Lord Richard, that he would consider an affair with a servant, but because of what happened with Dominic in the prior book, I can see how Richard could slowly be changing his rigid moral viewpoint.

I wish there were more stories in this series. I'd read (listen) to anything written by K J Charles as long as it's read by Matthew Lloyd Davies.

vive la Richard Vane

honestly this review is in direct response to the harpies on the kj charles Facebook group, who apparently don't have two brain cells to rub together between them which we all unfortunately learned the hard way. Richard is the brother to a man third only to the king of England, he is used to getting his own way and he is very aware of the weight of his privilege. He tries very hard not to abuse it, which is in fact his entire story arc. Not abusing his privilege. His LI is his valet, so you can see his dilemma. David, said valet, is a grown and brilliant adult, but Richard is still his boss. Also since it's like the 1800s David lives in his house? Richard controls literally everything about David's life, of COURSE hes hesitant beyond measure to begin a relationship with him, no matter how many times David swears up and down he wants one. Also, Dom (the LI in the previous book) is Richards Ex, and they broke off bc Dom is a sexual masochist, which confuses and upsets Richard who has no desire to punch his lover and doesn't understand why his lover wants to be punched. Dom explains many many times but Richard is heartbroken and angry that Dom seems to have chosen being punched over every other aspect of their relationship and cannot understand it even when he does listen. The point of Richard is that like Mr Darcy he begins very uptight and correct and unbending and self righteous (and caring and well intentioned) and then he gets his ass kicked emotionally by his own actions hurting the people he cares about most and he fucking learns from his mistakes and corrects his behavior. Kj charles wrote a brilliant man and I adore him most of all seeing as how the above is literally the plot of the book I didn't think it would need to be spelled out like this but apparently reading comprehension is a sadder state of affairs than I ever guessed. long live Richard Vane

Fav Narrator. Fav Author.

Always a winning pair! I never thought I could handle listening to another human being read romantic scenes, especially not scenes as steamy as the ones in this book. Yet, somehow this narrator makes blushing at my desk an absolute delight. I hope that KJ Charles works with him on future audiobooks. he's a treat

Mediocre plot, great narrator, too much sex.

narrator was the best thing about it. characters were decent, but too much focus on the sex, not enough on the plot. needed a bit more substance. overall not bad, but not riveting either. I had hoped for a more intricate game of cat and mouse from the Illustrious Mr. Ciprian, but recieved a relatively straight forward game of rumors. Ciprian should have defected, apparently genuinely and then done a few seemingly nasty things before turning on maltravers at the last second and masterfully outwitting him and his co-conspirator having planned the whole thing long in advance.

Best Climax Ever

The first two books in this trilogy dealt with two other romances in this same social circle, and I was a bit surprised (but not displeased) when this volume opened with this particular budding relationship. The plot moved along, and the pitfalls of the romance between David and Richard made it interesting. But the climax that happened in White's (a gentlemen's club) was amazingly well written. I could've listened to another hour of that well thought out trap set for Lord Maltravers. This book is definitely worth the listen.

Wonderful and intriguing

Fantastic series with well developed characters who have to grow and learn from their mistakes. This story is heartfelt and beautiful. The issues of sexual harassment in the workplace is always of interest and relevant in any age. But there is also the plot continuation from the previous books that kept the action going in the book too. Fantastic writing as always from KJ Charles. Narrator was amazing too. Such a range of voices and it was easy to forget it was someone reading a story and not a screenplay acted out in my head. I love when that happens.
