    Description

Sarah J. Maas' sexy, richly imagined series continues with the journey of Feyre's fiery sister, Nesta.

Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre's Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta's orbit. But her temper isn't the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

Amazing! My favorite in the series!

I’m a huge ACOTAR series and everything written by Sarah J. Maas and ACOSF is now my all time favorite book, Nesta my favorite character and Nessian (Nesta and Cassian ship name) my favorite romance!

The narration is the worst. :(

I have been waiting for this book for months now. I was so excited to hear another story from a beloved series. Until the narrator ruined. It was over exaggerated to a embarrassing degree and especially during the intimate scenes it was absolutely laughable. Amazing book, but I would recommend recording it with one of the previous narrators if you want it to be successful. This one can’t even compare to the last 4 books as far as narration.

Where is Jennifer Ikeda or Amanda Leigh Cobb??

I know how many Sarah J Maas Fans have been anxiously waiting for this book with high anticipation and hopeful expectations...I am one of them!! *sigh*
My review is not for the book itself, as I haven’t gotten very far into the story. My very sad and disappointed review is for the Audio version.
I don’t mean to diss or be unfair to Stina Nielsen, I have listened to her narrate prior books that I enjoyed. I’m just not sure what happened here with the Major Overacting. It’s almost like listening to something being narrated for very young children.
So yeah, it’s been very distracting to the story, which is SO unfortunate! It sucks when a beloved series changes narrators that may not know, or get the feel of the characters, or how the story has been told in the prior books.
I really don’t like being negative or critical about an artists’ work... I’m sure Ms Nielsen is very talented and well regarded in her field. Sometimes things just don’t vibe right.
I would just recommend listening to the sample before purchasing the audio version.

I can't get past the narration

I've been waiting over a year for this book! I pre ordered the audiobook and woke up today excited like Christmas morning. However, after suffering through 4 hours of the narration- I had to give up. I am loving the story so far despite the rough narration (which is a testament to Maas and her amazing series) but I feel like I have to continue reading on my own so I can pay more attention to the plot line and less cringing at the narrator. Everything is so overacted, voices all sound the same (especially the women) and I find my mind constantly wandering and missing the narrators of the last 4 books. If you are able to read the actual book, I recommend saving your audible credit, buying a copy and bringing the characters to life the way they deserve.

I don't care for the new narrator.

Nesta, Feyre, Mor, and Amren all sound the same. I had a hard time knowing who was talking. There is no cunning to Amren's voice, no light to Mor's, no sharpness to Nesta, and no hopefulness in Feyre's. They all sound tired, bored, and "sultry."

I should have purchased the hard copy instead.

    Good god the narrator sucks

Love the story; HATE the narrator. Everything is over done, the accents are terrible, character voices are all the same. Do yourself a favor and read the print version.

Book needs recorded with a new narrator.

I feel badly being this critical of someone’s work, but it seems like the narrator was purposefully trying to sabotage the book.

This is a long novel and many readers waited months for its release, so it is unfortunate that the audiobook was so disappointing. The author and this narrator appear to have worked together before, but the narrator sounds seriously impaired on this project. I’m not sure what happened, we all have off days. My advice, if you are a Mass fan, is to buy the hard copy and save your eardrums. It was that bad. It didn’t matter if you increased or slowed the playback speed. It was like a train wreck at times, you just couldn’t believe how bad it was. I don’t even remember most of the story because you can’t get past the overly dramatic ‘acting’. There will be a lot of refund requests on this. Sorry, I know this is harsh, and the author likely had no control over the final copy, but hoping it prevents someone else from enduring countless hours of torture.

Disappointingly thin plot an excuse for sex scenes

TERRIBLE narration and a rip off storyline of the first 3 books that goes nowhere. I wanted this book to work but oof, very little happens in this plot except Nesta has lots of sex, trains, and deals with her insecurities, This book doesn't move the "A Court of Thorns and Roses series" forward at all, and felt like an excuse to write raunchy sex scenes for the devoted reader for a quick buck but none of the magic of the 1st 3 books. I forced myself to finish it but would die of deep shame and mortification before ever recommending it to a friend. Guilty pleasures are great but this book was a pale, empty experience. The author did a disservice to her fans.

Good luck getting passed the narrator

I’m counting down the minutes until I return this for a refund because of the melodramatic and silly narrator. At this point, I’m like, one more minute, one more minute. Also, when did this series turn into the Black Dagger Brotherhood? Same-same! The author dialed it in, so I guess none of it matters.

    Performer didn't do her research

This review is going to be short. I'm going to have to buy the book and just read it. This performer did not listen to the other books to properly research her roles and it shows - big time. The voices she gives everyone are so incredibly off, it's jarring and frankly disappointing. I was so looking forward to this latest installment to the series. This performer missed the mark by a lot.

No, because I hate these people.

Still in the beginning, but holy mother of God, are these characters insufferable. The only good character is Nesta. She had literally several story options and we choose the route of making her a prisoner because they don't like her lifestyle. Forced relinquishing of freedom never sits right with me and I would love a story where Nesta deals with trauma her own way discovering something on her own while battling back the Night Court and her sisters. Maybe Nesta could learn more about herself by being the independent woman she is and that she need helps. But I know where this story is heading and it's going down the road the other books went down. Feyre and Rhys are ones who call the shots completely. I get it, they rule the joint, but still. I just want someone who knock them down a peg. Please!!!
Another thing, she doesn't have to fall in love. seriously, she seems like the person to not fw with this characters to begin with so this forced relationship that is already building with Cassian is not doing for me. Nesta is literally the only character with actual character.
I just want someone to punch Rhys in the mouth. Just one time please.

Terrible Narrator, and a Story that disappoints.

    No. No, no, no, no.
If you're looking for Sarah J. Maas's strong, fighting females, roaring warriors and action packed pages which are so exciting that you don't want to put the book down: Don't bother to read this book. Or maybe just start reading at Chapter 64.

Before that Chapter, it is probably the worst book of SJM ever. And believe me: I am really sorry I have to say this.
I was sooo looking forward to this book - I liked Nesta in the previous books and was eager to read more about her, to discover her point of view.
I loved Feyre and Rhys in ACOTAR. But already after their first appearance in ACOSF, they got on my nerves. It shows a weak Feyre and a lovesick and overprotective Rhys, who's just always brawling about how he fucked his mate.
In fact, this book is ALL ABOUT FUCKING and could definitely be one of Nestas smutty books, of which Cassian always makes fun. I can't think of any reason why this became kind of a "soft porn" book with 2/3 full of really detailed describtions of sex. It IS really annoying!
When I choose to listen to a "Young Adult Fantasy Book", I wanna listen to a YA fantasy book and not one of those stories for desperate housewives, who languidly devour some greasy romance novels while their husband snores in bed next to them.
It's not much more than fucking, talking about or thinking of sex. Oh yeah, plus a few tips on how to meditate or on healthy food. It only gets a bit more interesting during the bloodrite. During this part, Sara J. Maas shows some of her original qualities.

So, this book makes me sad. And mad.
(The proof of it is this arguably longest book review of my life.)
Not to mention the Narrator, who makes Azriel sound like he's got severe Asthma... or he's Marlon Brando in "the Godfather".

I am constantly asking myself WHY? Why has SJMs writing become so different to her previous books? Why are those throbbing cocks suddenly SO IMPORTANT so that they show up in almost every freakin' chapter????
Was she running out of storylines? 'Cause if you leave out all the fucking, this book would have been waaaay thinner.
The main story could have been good. - Fascinating and fantastical, like previous books in this series. But it keeps bobbing on the surface, because so much space is used by the - yes, I say it again - sex scenes.
And then that ending? Nesta sacrifices AGAIN everything she has for a sister of hers? Didn't she already sacrifice enough when she went into the Cauldron to safe Elain?
But oh well... you, who love lovey-dovey-sticky-sweet happy endings: Here you go.

SJM coping with her own birth trauma

    SPOILER WARNING

Now in this book we started off strong with an interesting protagonist and a storyline that truly hit the mark with this generation. Nesta was truly struggling and her journey was interestingly described. Her progress in getting better was true and ugly but something interesting to read but then Feyre with her pregnancy gets pushed into focus. Now everyone is having an existential crisis because no one is more important than Feyre and her babe. Through it all like a red line there is the subplot of someone evil tryna to bad stuff, Nesta ends up casually killing that person and acquiring the third object of power that she’s been trying to get all book long. The book ends with Feyre almost dying in childbirth because of course it’s not as easy as it may appear to some people. Nesta saves her but gives up her own powers because of course Nesta did not deserve her powers but Feyre and Elaine did? And literally any other fae around?

But what I liked about this book was the character development of Eris because he’s the underrated male that we all want Azriel to be.

PG18 and sooo full of energy!!

I read so many reviews before, during and now after listening to the book. I agree with all 😅

But in summary the storyline is so addictive and has all the points of a good fantasy checklist.
The relationship between the brothers, the sisters, the lovers forming and friendships growing has details that make it exciting.
I wish I could restart all books over without knowing the outcome! Some characters and stories left untold for potential future books to come?
    I hope so!

    Is it worth reading? YES

*This Review contains no spoilers for ACOSF but for the books before.*

I really don’t know where to start.

Let’s try with the most important thing first – I read a lot of negativ reviews about this book. „It is all about sex“ or „there is no real story“ I was very unsure if I want to read this book. Also because I’m not the biggest Nesta Fan from the original series. To be clear YES – there is a lot of sex or thinking about having pleasure with one another but I don’t think it was too much or that it was more visual then in ACOMF or ACOFAS. I’m still no big Nesta Fan but I like her now and I also undertand her better then before. I think while re-reading the ACOTAR-Serie I will be sympathize more with Nesta then before.

The evolution of Nesta: I really do like to read how she grow and how she is trying to manage all the things she suffered her whole life. Not only since she was made High Fae and what happend after but for her childhood and time as human as well. Her transition was very emotional and I feelt everything at the mountain scene on the lake.

The story – yes to be honest the first half oft he book was really slow pace and slowly to read for me. But after the first adventure for Nesta with Cassian and Azriel it reminded me oft he ACOTAR pace and I really enjoyed it. The last 100 pages are racing away.

    My personal dislike:
    1. Amren I lost my sympathy for her at the end of ACOWAR and in this book I lost it even more.

    2. Feysand – I think beginning with ACOFAS Rhysand and Feyre are presented with no real character, only arrogance and Rhys – I really don’t like how he „was“ in this book. His ignorance about everyone else expect him and Feyre. Yes maybe it should show his super-over-protectiv self BUT I don’t buy it.

Long story short. Is this book worth reading? YES!

Wouldn't recommend as an audio book

This is the first book of the series where I considered to stop listening. I knew (and enjoyed) Stina Nielsen's reading from other books, but in this one she completely overdoes it and is over the top dramatic.

The story: I like the development of the female friendships and their importance in overcoming things.
