I wrote and recorded pop music for over 20 years before trying my hand at choral music and then fiction. My first novel, The Ear of Saint Oswin, was a coming-of-age story set in Minneapolis in 1984, the biggest year ever for music in Minnesota (Husker Du, The Replacements, Prince). It tells of a small-town synth player (me) battling alcohol and other demons in the Twin Cities. An interesting feature of the book is the inclusion of numerous song lyrics from my own actual late eighties "demo" tapes which can be heard on a website associated with the book. (The Ear of Saint Oswin is not currently available for readers.)

Walking Around Target All Winter is a humorous Midwestern dysfunctional family story which takes a stab at romance, politics, religion and drug abuse. It follows the Berg family through five holidays (Halloween through Valentine's Day) and two blizzards in the town of Bear Lake, Minnesota.

Walking Around Wal Mart All Winter takes place two years later when the same family makes an impulsive move to a sleepy backwater on the Florida/Georgia border. The titles hint of the family's challenge to thrive in a very different culture this time around.

I've learned through writing that a novel is a monumental project that requires a lot of drive and an open mind, also input from others. But the rewards can be great.
