About G. Patrick Murphy, MD
Patrick Murphy, MD, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and writer with more than 35 years of experience in emergency medicine.
After growing up in Martinsville, Virginia, Patrick attended the University of Virginia and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1988. He completed a three-year Emergency Medicine residency at Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
Patrick spent more than 34 years practicing emergency medicine at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring and Holy Cross Hospital in Germantown, Maryland, before stepping away from full-time U.S. practice in 2025.
Rather than simply retire, Patrick decided to try something he had long wanted to do: practice medicine overseas. From March 2025 through March 2026, he worked as an emergency physician in Taupō, New Zealand.
That experience became the inspiration for Emergency in New Zealand, a firsthand account and practical guide for U.S. emergency physicians considering working abroad. The book documents what it actually takes to make the transition—from the logistics of finding a job and obtaining medical registration to navigating a nationalized healthcare system, adapting to a new culture, and discovering what life can look like when medicine is no longer the whole story.
Patrick now lives in the Northern Neck of Virginia and works part-time as an emergency physician and writes about medicine, career change, travel, and the possibilities that open up when you are willing to step outside the familiar.
