"A model of everything a detective story should be – a monument, a cathedral amongst detective stories." -Arnold Palmer in the London Sphere. "It is difficult now to grasp the extent of Van Dine's success in America, and to a much lesser extent in Britain. ... Van Dine's second book was on the...

On a whim one day, New York dilettante Philo Vance asked his friend, the District Attorney FX Markham to take him on his next big case. This transpires to be the cold blooded murder of one Alvin Benson at his home just after midnight. The police have a wealth of clues, and no end of suspects...

First published in 1926, The Benson Murder Case relates the murder of a wily womanizer found shot dead in his home, and behind locked doors. Amateur Detective Philo Vance makes his first appearance in this work and assists the New York District Attorney in tracking down the murderer.

Alvin Benson is found slumped over an easy chair in a room locked from the inside with a bullet in his head, and Wall Street and the high society of Manhattan are set ablaze with the news of the playboy stockbroker’s death. But when NYPD’s top detectives and ballistics experts can’t solve the mystery, it falls to Philo Vance, an art connoisseur and amateur sleuth, to find the killer. Vance’s intellectual and artistic background helps him uncover a series of odd clues, starting with a missing toupee and false teeth, and soon he is delving deep into the case.

It gives us considerable pleasure to be able to offer to the public the “inside” record of those of former District Attorney Markham’s criminal cases in which Mr. Philo Vance figured so effectively. The true inwardness of these famous cases has never before been revealed by S. S. Van Dine, Mr. Vance’s lawyer and almost constant companion, being the only person who possessed a complete record of the facts and has only recently been permitted to make them public.

Esistono davvero i draghi?

In this tale, a crime occurs under circumstances that appear nearly impossible to unravel. Every detail has been carefully arranged to mislead investigators, creating the illusion of an untraceable act. Yet, as always, Philo Vance brings his keen powers of observation, logical reasoning, and encyclopedic knowledge of human behavior to bear on the case. The story unfolds with a measured pace, presenting subtle clues, red herrings, and moments of suspense that engage the reader in the intellectual challenge of the investigation.
