I was so excited to see Marco—really see him. Just get away and be us. But when I ran out front and saw him on the bike, my very first reaction was no. I always felt yes when it came to hopping on the back of the bike with Marco. Something felt off. I didn’t know what. I can’t explain what happened next in any way other than by saying that this was always supposed to happen. It was always going to happen. I could not learn my lessons. Marco could not learn his lessons. I could see him—I could see the guard rail. The train tracks. The river. The rocks. The road.
