For teaching assistant Pippa, life in her home town of Penmenna is reassuringly predictable. Between managing the Easter egg hunt and dealing with her annoying but well-meaning family, Pippa thinks she has it all sorted. That is until gorgeous new substitute teacher Kam Choudhry arrives at Penmenna School, and turns everything upside down. Her father, Jay, doesn’t even have a photograph of the mother he lost and still refuses to discuss his life in India. Emmie finds comfort in the local museum – a treasure trove of another family’s stories and artefacts.

Modern-day New York, a subway train. David, an American Jewish jazz musician, torn between his dreams and his parents' expectations, sees a woman across the carriage. Ameena, a British Pakistani artist who left Manchester to escape the pressure from her conservative family, sees David. When a moment of sublime beauty occurs unexpectedly, the two connect, moved by their shared experience. From this flows a love that it appears will triumph above all.
