Book one of a history of the Christian churches in England, of England generally, and of Anglo-Saxon culture. It is the best known work of Venerable Bede, an English monk from northern England, and includes Julius Caesar's invasion in 55 BC, an account of Christianity in Roman Britain, the martyrdom of St. Alban, and the story of Augustine's mission to England in 597 that brought Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons. The work is believed to have been completed in 731.

Martin Luther was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, monk, and a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. Luther came to reject several teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money, proposing an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences in his 95 Theses of 1517.

The King James version of the Bible has been a revered translation for over 400 years and is popular the world over. In today's troubled and uncertain times, the book of Revelation is especially relevant, prophesying Jesus' return, bringing judgment to all on Earth. In this final book of the New Testament, the vision as given to St. John the Divine on the Island of Patmos is powerfully and sympathetically presented by the popular narrator Phillip J. Mather.

Russell Conwell (1843-1925) was a man of many parts - lawyer, Baptist minister, traveler, Civil War veteran, and philanthropist - but is best remembered today for his celebrated lecture, Acres of Diamonds, which was published in book form in 1890. Conwell's basic premise in this work is very simple: A person's fortune can be found in his own backyard.

Like Wallace D. Wattles, the reclusive James Allen (1864-1912) has posthumously become an icon in the self-help industry and particularly for practitioners who promote a life of unrestrained abundance. Ironically, Allen actually recommended a life of simplicity and plain thinking and considered that a state of unshakeable peace and effortless wisdom constituted true wealth.

The concept of life as a pilgrimage, or a path from ignorance to realization, is central in the writings of the philosopher and New Thought pioneer James Allen (1864-1912). According to Allen, all men must and will follow this path, at the end of which is a state of spiritual satisfaction, which can be attained only by the earnest efforts of the seeker. While progress along the path necessitates the "strenuous tread" of the pilgrim, there are also valuable opportunities for rest and refreshment.

For James Allen, philosopher and pioneer of the New Thought movement, the highest expression of personal realization was to be "in the world" but not "of the world." As Allen says, "The turmoil of the world we cannot avoid, but the disturbances of mind we can overcome." In this collection of short essays he discusses the attitudes and actions required for the attainment of that abiding inner peace "where the Heavenly Silence reigns."

In the final volume of The Divine Comedy, Dante completes his tour of the afterlife and rises to the highest sphere of heaven. His guide is Beatrice, who acts as both an object of devotion and also a source of instruction. In verse of the most sublime order, Dante not only describes the sights, sounds, and inhabitants of this celestial region, but also presents, with astonishing clarity, a comprehensive view of Catholic theology.

In this audiobook James Allen makes a trenchant examination of one of the great conundrums of philosophy and religion: the problem of evil. As the author states in the foreword: All the problems of life, whether they be social, political, or religious, subsist in ignorance and wrong living. As they are solved in the heart of each individual, they will be solved in the mass of men.

The Gospel of Mark portrays the life of Christ complete with parables, sermons, and a narrative of many events in the adult life of Jesus. As much a book of history as a book of faith, and is equally suited for both.

Billy Sunday the acclaimed evangelist of the early 20th century did this sermon extolling Christians to vote for prohibition. Much of his rhetoric resembled today's reasoning for not legalizing marijuana.

Even among Christians there is a difference of opinion about the end of the world. All seem to agree there is a spiritual component to end times, but well-loved preacher D. L. Moody provides a sermon on how he interprets the biblical texts on the subject - and why he believes this is God's blessed hope.

Beyond the legend of Santa Claus, there is a man venerated as a saint. This is a short biographical tale of Saint Nicholas and the parallels between the legend and the man.

Timothy has been described as the Apostle Paul's spiritual son. Paul invested in the life of the young man and instructed him in the ways of Christian thought. Henry Van Dyke is widely known for his classic stories like The Other Wise Man, but this audiobook is a series of three sermons he wrote on the subject of peace. Ironically much of what he wrote seems like current headlines. This series was written just after the conclusion of World War I. The same fears we experience now were experienced by those who heard these word for the first time. There is encouragement for all in this audiobook. Narrated by Glenn Hascall.

C. T. Studd was one of the Cambridge Seven in the 1800s. These men dedicated their lives to Christian missions work. This bold treatise by Studd encourages Christians to be bold in sharing their faith - to contain inner granite rather than melting chocolate. This is an impassioned look at taking faith seriously in a time when comfort was sought with greater enthusiasm.
