His comprehensive study of the origins and development of the United States caused him to be referred to as the “Father of American history."

After teaching as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Beijing for the year 1920, Bertrand Russell penned The Problem of China, in which he describes China's past and present, opening on the country's possible future. Written 100 years ago, the work is demonstrative of the philosopher's insight and analysis of both the West and the East. His cautionary advice and predictions of the potential future of China are uncanny in their accuracy.

The prize-winning History of the American Frontier, 1763-1893 covers a very wide sweep of topics, with unusual strength in handling violent relations between the frontiersman and the Indians. Paxson emphasized the impact on people of the process of moving to the west, downplaying the static aspects of specific localities.

Louis de Rouvroy, Duke of Saint-Simon (1675-1755) provides the world with unparalleled insight both into the rule of France's Sun King, Louis XIV, and the tantalizing intrigues of the monarch's inner circle. Saint-Simon notes in his Memoirs that it was his love of reading - and of history in particular - that sparked his interest in recording his own observations. The length and breadth of his notes were undoubtedly made the more possible because he kept his writings secret.

July 1967: At the Moscow Air Show, the Soviets unveiled six new state-of-the-art aircraft. From among this lineup of new fighters and interceptors stood the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 - purportedly capable of outrunning and outmaneuvering any aircraft in NATO’s inventory. The clay tablets, which were discovered in the ruins of the library of King Ashurbanipal (B.C. 668-626) at Kuyunjik (Nineveh), contain detailed descriptions of the views and beliefs of the Babylonians and Assyrians about the Creation.

Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875-April 3, 1950) was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African American history. A founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916, Woodson has been called the “father of black history."

Charles A. Beard, a proponent of the “New History", emphasized the importance of cultural economic developments as opposed to just warfare and diplomacy.

Except perhaps the struggle between patriots and tories at the outbreak of the Revolution, no controversy in the history of the United States has aroused such passion and led to such momentous results as that between the advocates and the opponents of slavery … The book has the double purpose of describing the conditions of slavery and the state of mind of those interested in it or against it, and at the same time recording the events which mark the anti-slavery agitation.

Roosevelt’s The Winning of the West quickly became a bestseller. The first edition of his book sold out in little more than a month and helped establish Roosevelt as a literary man and scholar, placing him on a path toward future greatness.

The centenary of the Wars of Liberation is now close at hand, and from the hitherto unpublished archives and private records that are known to exist in Germany some fresh light will probably soon be thrown on the downfall of Napoleon. This brief study of a notable campaign may be of some help to the student of the past and the historian of the future.

J. Franklin Jameson helped found the American Historical Association (1884), and was the first managing editor of the American Historical Review. He also wrote The American Revolution Considered as a Social Movement (1926) and invited W. E. B. Du Bois to present a paper concerning Reconstruction at the 1909 AHA meeting. With Waldo Leland, he started lobbying Congress to create the National Archives, the building for which was first funded in 1926.

A Generation of American Historiography by William A. Dunning is a nice overview of book trends and the histories and historians in the decades (a generation) prior to 1900, when most historians were male and white, of course … but not all.
