When Yang Wei travels to C City for work, he expects nothing more than a standard business trip. A break from his day-to-day routine, a good paycheck, a nice hotel—nothing too extravagant, of course. No fuss, but all the amenities. But this is where his problems begin. When he wakes three days later, things don’t improve; they get worse. With no explanation, the hotel forcibly sends him to a hospital for examination.

Fresh out of the Academy, Cal must learn to fit in on an antiquated, intergalactic space freighter with a much older, multiracial crew. With the rocket's destination and mission kept secret, Cal works closely with his crewmates to keep operations safe and running smoothly. When sabotage is discovered that could end in a catastrophic explosion, the chief engineer risks his life to save the spaceship, and Cal jumps in to help. Can they stop a core meltdown to save the ship and crew? How will Cal perform under pressure, being the "new kid" on this "old bucket of andirons"?

Just hours after setting foot on a new planet, Cal and the crew find themselves caught up in an interplanetary kidnapping plot. Reuniting the suspiciously-silent young victim with her parents on their far-off home world will make Cal rich beyond his wildest dreams. Unfortunately, half the pirates and bounty hunters in the galaxy have the same idea, and they're more than happy to take the girl by force.
