Acclaimed actress Claire Danes burnishes an epic story of heroes, gods, and monsters in a groundbreaking translation of The Odyssey, the first great adventure story in the Western literary tradition. When the wily warrior-king Odysseus sets off for home after the Trojan War, he doesn’t realize this simple undertaking will become a perilous journey of 10 years. Beset at every turn, he encounters obstacles, detours, and temptations—both supernatural and human—while his wife Penelope fends off would-be suitors desperate to take the throne.

The Trojan War is over, and Odysseus longs to return to wife and son on his island kingdom of Ithaca. But between hero and home stands an array of dangers unlike any ever faced by mortal man.

Odysseus’s greatest challenge is only just beginning. The armies of Troy have been defeated, and the city lies in ruins. His oath fulfilled, Odysseus can at last sail for Ithaca and the long-awaited reunion with his family. But the gods, who were once his allies, have turned against him. Exiled with the warrior Eperitus, he is thrust into a world of seductive demi-gods and man-eating monsters.

He Chose War. She Chose to Wait. The gods chose suffering. Odysseus burned Troy with a lie. Penelope kept Ithaca alive with one. From the bloodstained shores of Troy to the unraveling halls of Ithaca, Odysseus: Nobody’s Hero is a mythic, cinematic retelling of Homer’s epic—for a new generation of readers. For ten years, Odysseus fought a war he couldn’t win. For ten more, he faced monsters, storms, witches, cannibals, and gods. But the real reckoning waited at home. At his side: Athena, the goddess who guides and manipulates. Telemachus, the son raised by silence and shadow.

On the island of Ithaca, queen Penelope maintains a delicate balance of power. Many years ago, her husband Odysseus sailed to war with Troy and never returned. In his absence, Penelope uses all her cunning to keep the peace - but this is shattered with the arrival of Orestes, King of Mycenae. Orestes, son of Agamemnon, is mad. Wracked with guilt for putting his own mother to death, he grows ever more unhinged. But a king cannot be seen to be weak. To keep him safe from the ambitious men of Mycenae, his sister Elektra brings him to Ithaca to recover under the protection of Penelope.

Odysseus begins where Homer's Odyssey leaves off and recounts the eponymous Greek hero's final quest to settle his debt with the god Poseidon. He must travel to many cities carrying a wooden oar, find a land that knows no salt, and offer a sacrifice to the god on the site where a stranger asks the purpose of the oar. During his perilous journey, he becomes involved in the intrigues swirling among the great Trojan War veterans and their heirs and must also protect his own family and kingdom.

After a decade of war, Ilium is reduced to a ruined world of ashes… The Ithaca, a ship besieged by oligarchs and parasites, resolutely awaits the return of their Captain. Carrying the weight of duty and the dead, Odysseus begins the long journey home, flying in the face of the Gods. But the Gods will not be defied. If Odysseus is doomed to never reach the safe harbour of his people, he must find a way to bring the Ithaca to him. And so his real journey begins, not through space, but deep into time itself.

From an acclaimed classicist comes a witty, unusual, and fascinating "biography" of Homer's fictional Bronze Age hero, Odysseus. In this entertaining book, Charles Beye fills out the story of this extraordinary figure while at the same time portraying Odysseus' evolution through the course of a strange and adventuresome life, at times so remote, at times so immediate in the contemporary perspective.

Odysseus and the Oar was written for military members, veterans, their loved ones, and those who counsel and serve them. Using Homer's Odyssey and the experiences of today's veterans, he explores the processes of homecoming, healing, and transformation. This is "the archetype of the warrior's return," a phrase coined by Magers that corresponds with the archetypal patterns seen in myths about returning warriors worldwide. Honoring these timeless patterns, Magers argues, is essential for veterans to heal and recover the meaning, vitality, and purpose of their lives.
