Two Treatises of Government is a work of political philosophy that outlined a concept foreign to the American people who, at the time, were still under English monarchy. This concept is what we now call democracy and advocated for a system in which all people were afforded rights to freedom and property ownership. The book was intended to push forward the ideas on contract theory and natural rights. Thomas Jefferson borrowed many of the ideas of Two Treatises of Government while writing the Declaration of Independence.

The second book delves deeper into the mechanisms of sensation, reflection, perception, and retention, unveiling how these elements contribute to the formation of simple ideas. Contrasting sharply with ...

In the First Treatise, Locke launches a robust critique of Sir Robert Filmers Patriarcha, which defends the idea of a divinely-sanctioned, hereditary rule. However, it is the Second Treatise that has left a lasting impact, articulating a vision of civil society grounded in natural rights and contract theory. Locke explores the state of nature and the emergence of property and civilization, ultimately asserting that true ...
