Harriet Ann Jacob's autobiography documents her life as a slave and how she attained freedom for herself and her children. Harrowing in its descriptions of sexual abuse, Jacob's slave narrative is notable for the appeal it made to abolitionist women to open their eyes to the realities of slavery. Deemed too shocking for reading audiences at the time, the book was shelved before it was published in 1861 near the start of the Civil War.

John Howard was a good Catholic boy brought up in postwar Lancashire, who became more turned on by gilt than by guilt. Sacred Heart statues and a wall-mounted crucifix, along with plans for the priesthood, were replaced by Marc Bolan posters, miming to "Metal Guru" in front of a full-length mirror and dreams of pop stardom. As glam rock stomped into millions of teenage bedrooms, John left home for London and was quickly signed to CBS Records, making his debut album at Abbey Road studios and enjoying the hedonistic pleasures of a fully gay-liberated city.

Maria Child, who edited the book for its author. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent. The book documents Jacobs's life as a slave and how she gained freedom for herself and for her children. Jacobs contributed to the genre of slave narrative by using the techniques of sentimental novels "to address race and gender issues.

Published in 1861, Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is an autobiographical account of the author's experiences as a slave in 19th-century North Carolina, from her relatively happy childhood to the brutality she experienced as a teenager and young woman to her eventual escape to the North.

I'm a 64-year-old retired lawyer and former Assistant Attorney General with an unusual story to tell. Every word of it is true. It happened in a state park known as Devil's Den. For fear of losing my job and damaging my reputation in the legal community, I never spoke about the incident. If it hadn't happened to me, I'd be skeptical too. In 1977, I was an active duty NCO in the USAF. A friend and I planned a two-night camping trip to explore the wilderness. We drove deep into the forest until we came to a high plateau. There on the horizon sat a perfect triangle of three very bright stars....

The great abolitionist speaker and author Harriet Ann Jacobs was born into slavery in 1813 in North Carolina. When her mother died, Harriet’s mistress, Margaret Horniblow, cared for her and taught her to read, write, and sew, but when Horniblow died, she suffered the misery of cruel masters.

One of the first personal narratives written by an ex-slave, this is also one of the few written by a woman. Harriet Jacobs (1813-97) was enslaved, along with her family, in North Carolina under a ruthless master who sexually harassed her. After several failed escape attempts, and several years of hiding, she finally made her way North to freedom, where she was eventually reunited with her children. The book was published in 1861.
