  • The Deadliest Fire in US History That Nobody Remembers
    Jan 12 2026

On October 8, 1871, while the world watched Chicago burn, the deadliest wildfire in American history was destroying Peshtigo, Wisconsin. In this episode of the Yore Town Podcast, Beard Laws and Meg uncover the forgotten history of the Peshtigo Fire—a disaster so hot it created its own weather systems, fire tornadoes, and boiled rivers.

Most people know about the Great Chicago Fire, but few know that on the exact same night, a firestorm in Northeastern Wisconsin killed over 1,500 people and burned 1.2 million acres. Why did history forget this tragedy?

    In this episode, we discuss:

How the logging industry turned the forest into "dry powder."

The science behind a "firestorm" and hurricane-force fire winds.

Terrifying survivor accounts of burying themselves in dirt to survive.

Why the Great Chicago Fire overshadowed this massive tragedy.

If you are a fan of dark history, survival stories, and forgotten American events, this episode is a must-watch.

  • Why This Adirondack Boomtown Had Zero Defense Against Fire
    Jan 5 2026

On July 30th, 1899, a small fire and a steady wind erased nearly two-thirds of Tupper Lake, NY in a single night.

In this episode of the Yore Town Podcast, we travel back to the late 19th century in the Adirondacks. Tupper Lake was a boomtown built for loggers, mill workers, and railroad laborers. It was fast, practical, and constructed almost entirely of wood. But it had one fatal flaw: No fire department.

We break down the timeline of the disaster, from the first spark behind King & Page’s store to the "continuous roar" of collapsing buildings that followed. We explore how 169 buildings—including homes, churches, and hotels—were lost, and the incredible decision the town made the very next morning: To stay and rebuild from the ashes.

    In this episode:

Why Tupper Lake was a "tinderbox" waiting to explode.

The chaos of a town fighting a massive blaze with only buckets.

The morning after: How a town survives losing everything.

The transition from a temporary logging camp to a permanent community.

  • The Bizarre Sodder Children Disappearance: Fire, Conspiracy, and a Family's Desperate Search
    Dec 8 2025

A Christmas Eve fire, five missing children, and a chilling mystery that has lasted nearly 80 years. INVESTIGATE the Sodder case with us.

Welcome to Yore Town, where we delve into the darkest corners of American true crime. This episode unpacks the most unsettling unsolved mystery of the 20th century: the disappearance of the Sodder children on Christmas Eve in 1945.

In Fayetteville, West Virginia, a chaotic house fire consumed the Sodder home, but five children—Maurice, Martha, Louis, Jennie, and Betty—were never accounted for. The fire should have left physical evidence, but the frantic search yielded no human remains. This single, disturbing fact fueled a decades-long pursuit for the truth by the Sodder parents, who were convinced their children were still alive.

We explore the bizarre circumstances that make this case unique: the mysterious late-night phone call, the ladder that vanished from the side of the house, the trucks that inexplicably wouldn't start, and eyewitness accounts of the children being seen after the fire.

The investigation was poorly handled and riddled with inconsistencies, deepening the family's suspicion of foul play. The true heart of the mystery lies in the powerful conspiracy theories that emerged, including potential political retaliation linked to George Sodder’s outspoken views against Fascist Italy, or even involvement by organized crime.

Join us as we analyze the official record against the family’s belief, the chilling clues, and the incredible hope maintained until their deaths. The Sodder children case remains a haunting symbol of unresolved tragedy in America.

    Key Takeaways & SEO Triggers:
Sodder Children: The fate of the five missing children who vanished on Christmas Eve, 1945.

  • The POLAR BEAR JAIL: How Churchill, Manitoba Manages the World's Toughest Neighbors | Yore Town
    Dec 1 2025

Can humans and the world's largest land predator truly coexist? DIVE into the chilling reality of Churchill, Manitoba here!

Welcome to the Yore Town Podcast, where we explore the most challenging and unique stories from communities facing extreme situations. In this episode, we venture to Churchill, Manitoba, famously known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World, to investigate the town's innovative, and sometimes terrifying, approach to wildlife management.

This is the incredible true story of the Polar Bear Jail (formally known as the Polar Bear Holding Facility). Built not for punishment, but as a critical means of coexistence, this facility manages bear-human interactions during the peak wildlife migration season. We peel back the curtain on this unique institution and the brave men and women of the Polar Bear Alert Program who employ armed responders to protect the community from potential polar bear attacks.

We explore the history that necessitated this innovative solution, including the crucial late but necessary step of closing the town dump in 2005 to reduce devastating bear-human conflicts. You'll learn how bears that enter the jail are strictly treated to unlearn their dangerous attraction to human food and habitation. This is a story of extreme community safety protocols.

More than just a management technique, this episode delves into the profound environmental forces at play. Climate change is rapidly exacerbating the challenges faced by both the bears and the town, leaving the future of Churchill and its magnificent wildlife inhabitants deeply uncertain.

Join us for a fascinating look at conservation at the sharpest edge, where humans and bears must adapt or perish.

    Key Takeaways:
Churchill Manitoba: The unique challenges of the Polar Bear Capital of the World.

Polar Bear Jail: The true purpose and function of the Polar Bear Holding Facility in wildlife management.

Migration & Danger: Why polar bears gather in Churchill, leading to dangerous encounters during migration.

Polar Bear Alert Program: How armed responders protect the town.

Climate Change Impact: The increasing pressure climate change puts on both the town and the bears' conservation efforts.
