  • The Val Johnson Incident: What Struck a Sheriff’s Patrol Car From the Sky?
    Oct 8 2026

In the early hours of August 27, 1979, Marshall County deputy sheriff Val Johnson was patrolling near Stephen, Minnesota, when he saw a bright light near the road and turned onto State Highway 220 to investigate. Johnson later said he initially thought it might be an aircraft attempting an emergency landing. Then, he said, the light came toward his patrol car, glass broke, and his memory stopped.

At 2:19 a.m., Johnson radioed for help. A responding deputy found him dazed beside a damaged 1977 Ford LTD patrol car. Johnson was treated for eye irritation and a head complaint. The vehicle showed a fractured windshield, damaged lights, bent antennas, and other marks that drew the attention of police, journalists, UFO investigators, a Ford glass specialist, and a Honeywell engineer. The car survives today in the Marshall County Historical Society.

The incident became famous as a UFO case, but Johnson did not claim to see aliens, occupants, or a spacecraft. He said he did not know what caused the event. Proposed explanations have included an unusual electrical or atmospheric phenomenon, including ball lightning; a misidentified light followed by an ordinary road accident; and, later, an unsupported allegation that the damage was staged.

The central difficulty is the record itself. The original sheriff’s file and original dispatch recording were later reported missing, while the museum reportedly holds copies and portions of audio. The visible damage remains. The cause does not. Can the surviving evidence identify what happened on that Minnesota road, or only establish that something unexplained happened to an officer on patrol?

  • The Guardian UFO Tape: Canada’s Anonymous UFO Video Mystery
    Oct 1 2026

In February 1992, UFO investigator Bob Oechsler received an anonymous package from Canada. It reportedly contained a VHS cassette marked “Guardian,” photographs, maps, and documents claiming to describe a strange event near West Carleton, Ontario. The tape appeared to show colored lights and a structured object in a rural field. Its sender gave no verifiable account of who filmed it, when it was filmed, or exactly where the camera stood.

The case soon became connected to Diane Labenek, who later described seeing unusual red and blue lights near her West Carleton home on August 18, 1991. Oechsler, local investigator Graham Lightfoot, physicist Bruce Maccabee, Canadian UFO researchers, and later the RCMP all became part of an investigation that moved from anonymous mail to field searches, reported samples, disputed military paperwork, and an unsuccessful effort to identify the person calling themselves Guardian.

The strongest evidence is the surviving video imagery and the documented history of investigators receiving and studying it. The central weakness is provenance: no authenticated camera-original cassette, identified operator, verified filming date, or continuous custody record has publicly settled the recording’s origin. Supporters argued that questionable documents did not automatically invalidate the video. Critics concluded the wider presentation contained fabricated or unreliable elements and may have involved ordinary lights, aviation activity, or staging.

The unresolved question is narrower than the television mystery: what produced the images on the Guardian tape, and can that answer ever be separated from the anonymous story built around them?

  • The RB-47 Encounter: The Military Aircraft That Tracked an Unknown Object for Hundreds of Miles
    Sep 24 2026

On July 17, 1957, an Air Force RB-47 carrying six officers crossed Louisiana during a return mission when pilot Lewis D. Chase and co-pilot James H. McCoid reported an intense white light with a bluish tint passing ahead of the aircraft.

Electronic-monitor operator Frank B. McClure had also reported unusual radar-like emissions received by the RB-47's passive direction-finding equipment. Later, near Dallas–Fort Worth, Chase diverted toward another light and contacted the Duncanville Air Defense radar station, call sign Utah.

The surviving records preserve visual reports, selected receiver bearings, a reported ground-radar exchange, and a major documentary conflict: the crew-side summary says Duncanville confirmed a target, while the station's own teletype reports negative contact with the object.

This episode follows the flight from Louisiana to Texas and Oklahoma, the records that survived, the Colorado investigation's wrong date, James McDonald's recovery of the 1957 file, and Philip Klass's competing reconstruction.
