    Hands That Say You Are Still Here and You Still MatterThis is Renata Helfman-Baron's third conversation on Trust Your Innersense, and it may be the most profound one yet. Renata is the founder of Lipstick Angels, a national nonprofit that rolls a beauty and wellness cart right into hospital infusion centers while patients are hooked up to chemotherapy. Facials, aromatherapy to ease nausea, eyebrow stencils, scalp massages, a hand massage when someone is not ready for anything else. It began 14 years ago when Renata was caring for her grandmother through cancer treatment and realized there was nothing out there that looked like what she was imagining. So she built it herself. But today's conversation opens with something brand new. Lipstick Angels has just launched a pilot program at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, California, expanding for the first time into palliative care, rooms where people are actively dying and the goal is peace, not cure. The ribbon cutting was the day before this conversation. And the hospital chaplain, Pastor Pat, surprised Renata with a blessing he had written for the occasion, a poem addressed to the hands of the Lipstick Angels, and she reads it here in full. It is one of those moments that asks you to put down whatever you are doing and just listen.The Kindness of a Stranger Walking Up with an OfferingRenata has spent 14 years learning what it means to truly care for someone. And what she has found, over and over, is that the beauty part was never really the point. The point was the kindness of a stranger walking up to a person in a terrifying moment and offering something. A presence. An unhurried few minutes. A choice. She talks about why patience is the most important thing her volunteers are trained in, why the first visit sometimes means just sitting nearby and handing someone a lip balm, and why touching a person who is sick, frail, or frightened is something you have to earn slowly. She also shares something that took her years to fully understand: often the person going through treatment will ask the Angels to take care of their spouse or their daughter or their friend first, before themselves. Because watching someone you love receive care lifts the weight of feeling like a burden. Joanne shares a moment she witnessed at the infusion center where a woman asked the Angels to give her husband his very first facial alongside hers. Neither of them said much. They did not have to.Give Yourself Permission to Fall ApartRenata is honest in this final stretch of the conversation. She is carrying grief right now. A dear friend is in palliative care, and a woman who meant a great deal to her just died of brain cancer. She pulls from her library a book she returns to when things get heavy: Pema Chödrön's "When Things Fall Apart". And she says something simple that lands with real weight: we should teach children that it is okay to fall apart. That falling apart is not the end of strength. It is how you get back to it. She also reflects on what our culture still gets wrong about caring for people in crisis: that the system too often leaves patients confused and overwhelmed, navigating multiple hospitals and too many decisions alone, when what they need most is someone to say, we have you, you can take this off your list.     The Girl Who Signed Every Card with Hearts and RainbowsJulie Pofsky has always been a dreamer. Her mom still laughs about the little girl who covered every card in hearts, rainbows, and flowers, and her elementary school teachers were not always thrilled with how much she talked in class. But looking back after a recent milestone birthday, Julie sees that those early traits were never a distraction. They were a preview. Raised in a sporty, outdoorsy family where the one rule was do what makes you happy, Julie learned early that personal connection is what makes her tick and shine. She also remembers watching her mom volunteer at school and quietly give every Sunday, small moments that taught her we are all in this together. After college, with a public relations degree and a passion for environmental science, she landed in Telluride, Colorado, working alongside her first mentor, a true spitfire who pivoted from outdoor industry PR to local conservation work and brought Julie along for the ride.     The 15 Year Old Who Picked Up the PhoneViveka Hulyalkar grew up in Cleveland as the daughter of parents who immigrated from India, and from a very young age she carried a deep awareness of how arbitrary privilege can be and a real sense of responsibility to do something meaningful with hers. As a high school sophomore, she started a student-run environmental group called Green Society. They sold smoothies to raise money for solar panels. Then Viveka did what most teenagers would never think to do: she found a phone number for the Cleveland Cavaliers business development office and called it. One thing led to another, and that small school project turned into a featured spot on the arena floor during NBA Green Week and $1 million worth of solar panels installed in local schools. Those panels are still visible from the highway in Ohio today. But the lesson she carried from that experience was even bigger. So many brands she loved were quietly putting time and money into causes she cared about, and almost no one knew. That missed opportunity stayed with her for years.Business as a Force for GoodViveka walks Joanne through the path that shaped her: falling in love with Brown on her second campus tour, interning at the UN and the Supreme Court of India, and expanding a nonprofit in Bombay that went on to partner with the government of Maharashtra. Along the way she realized something important about herself. She wanted change at scale, but she also wanted change at speed, and business could offer both.
