  • EP 27 — When Automation Makes Your Business Harder to Trust
    Aug 18 2026

Automation is supposed to make doing business easier. It can help your team respond faster, follow up consistently, prevent things from falling through the cracks, and give customers the information they need when they need it.

It can also create confusion, frustration, and distrust when the system becomes more important than the person it was designed to serve.

In this episode of Trust Leaks™, Sandra Martini examines how customer-facing automation can quietly create trust leaks — even when the technology itself is working exactly as designed.

How Can Automation Damage Customer Trust?

The problem usually isn't automation itself. It's what the automated experience communicates to the customer.

An efficient system can still make customers work harder, repeat information they've already provided, question whether anyone is actually paying attention, or struggle to reach a real person when something goes wrong.

Sandra explores five common ways automation can weaken trust:

    • Customers can't tell whether a real person is involved.
    • The system ignores information the customer has already provided.
    • Automated messages create promises the business isn't prepared to keep.
    • There's no clear path to a human when the standard process doesn't work.
    • Personalization feels artificial rather than genuinely relevant.

As Sandra explains, customers don't separate your automation from your business. To them, the automation is the business.

If a system confirms that something happened, customers expect it to have happened. If it provides a timeline, they expect that timeline to be honored. If it promises a next step, they expect someone to own it.

The 5-Question Trust Test for Customer-Facing Automation

Before automating a customer experience, ask:

    1. Does this make the next step clearer?
    2. Does the customer know what's happening, what happens next, and when to expect movement?
    3. Does this reduce work for the customer?
    4. Saving your team time isn't an improvement if customers have to repeat information, search harder for answers, or manage additional steps.
    5. Is the information accurate?
    6. Confirmations, timelines, status updates, and recommendations should reflect what's actually happening and what your team can realistically deliver.
    7. Is ownership visible?
    8. Customers should understand who is responsible for the next step and what they can do if that step doesn't happen.
    9. Is there a clear path when automation isn't enough?
    10. Not every situation fits a workflow. Customers need a reasonable way to reach someone who can understand the exception and take responsibility.

Automate the Task, Not the Relationship

Strong automation doesn't make a business feel less human.

It makes it easier for the humans inside the business to be responsive, prepared, and reliable.

This week, choose one automated customer experience in your business — a contact form, booking sequence, onboarding email, chatbot, reminder, or follow-up campaign — and experience it from the customer's perspective.

    Ask yourself:

Do I know what's happening? Do I know what happens next? Do I know when a real person becomes involved? And do I know what to do when my situation doesn't fit the system?

Automation should make your business easier to trust, not merely easier to run.

  • EP 26 — Trust Deposits: How to Build Customer Trust From the First Yes
    Aug 11 2026

Most businesses know they need to build customer trust. The bigger question is: What actually makes a customer feel confident they made the right decision?

Trust is not built only by delivering a great final result. It is built through a series of smaller moments throughout the customer experience. These moments are trust deposits, and they begin as soon as someone says yes.

In this episode of Trust Leaks™, Sandra Martini shares practical ways businesses can intentionally increase trust before uncertainty, confusion, or buyer’s remorse have an opportunity to take hold.

You’ll discover why the moments immediately following a purchase, signed agreement, appointment, registration, or other commitment matter so much, and how something as simple as telling someone exactly what happens next can strengthen the relationship.

Sandra also explores shock and awe packages, welcome gifts, and onboarding experiences, including why some create an immediate sense of confidence and excitement while others create overwhelm or disappointment.

Using real-world examples, she breaks down the difference between a gesture designed to impress and an experience designed around what the customer actually needs.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:
    • What a trust deposit is and how it strengthens customer relationships
    • Why the period immediately after someone says yes is a critical trust-building opportunity
    • How clear next steps reduce uncertainty and buyer’s remorse
    • Why proactive communication and visible progress increase customer confidence
    • What makes a welcome or shock and awe package genuinely effective
    • How an impressive gift can work against you when it does not support the customer experience
    • Why remembering customer details is far more important than it may appear
    • How communicating problems early can actually strengthen trust
    • Why repeated small trust deposits often matter more than one impressive gesture

    Key idea from this episode

Trust is not increased by how much you send or how impressive you appear. It increases when what you do supports the relationship, reduces uncertainty, and makes the customer’s next step easier.

A question to ask about your own customer experience

Look at what happens immediately after someone takes the next step with your business.

    What do they receive?

    What do they know?

    What have you told them?

    What are they likely wondering?

And what could you do in that moment to make trust easier for them to give you?

The strongest customer experiences do more than avoid trust leaks. They intentionally create reasons to trust.

  • EP 25 — How to Know What to Fix First in Your Business
    Aug 4 2026

When several small problems happen at once, it can feel as though everything in your business needs immediate attention.

A prospect goes quiet. A client asks for an update. A deadline slips. A handoff gets missed. Suddenly, you’re reviewing every meeting, email, tool, system, and process.

The real challenge isn’t fixing everything. It’s identifying which trust leak is creating the greatest cost.

In this episode of Trust Leaks™, Sandra Martini explains how to separate a visible symptom from the underlying business breakdown. You’ll learn how uncertainty enters the client, prospect, or team experience—and how to identify the smallest repair capable of restoring clarity and trust.

    In this episode:
    • Why the first problem you notice may only be a symptom
    • How unclear expectations create trust leaks
    • Three questions that help uncover the real source of a breakdown
    • How to distinguish an isolated mistake from a recurring systems issue
    • Why the loudest problem isn’t always the most expensive
    • How to prioritize issues affecting sales, delivery, time, repeat business, and referrals
    • Simple ways to close communication, ownership, and follow-through gaps

To identify where a trust leak begins, ask:

    1. Where did uncertainty enter the experience?
    2. What did the person expect to happen?
    3. What actually happened instead?

The gap between the final two answers often reveals the breakdown.

The right repair may be as simple as clarifying what happens next, assigning an owner, confirming a deadline, sending an earlier update, or closing the loop when a task is complete.

You don’t need to fix everything. You need to fix the right thing first.

Take the free Trust Leaks™ Diagnostic at TrustLeaks.com. It takes less than five minutes and helps reveal where communication, expectations, experience, follow-through, ownership, or process may be quietly weakening trust.
