 The Soul, or Rational Psychology by Emanuel Swedenborg is a philosophical treatise written in 1742–1743, though only published posthumously in 1901. It represents Swedenborg’s attempt to construct a rational science of the soul before his later turn to theology. In this work, he explores the essence of the human soul as the most perfect and formative substance that gives order and life to the body. He frames psychology not as a mere study of behavior, but as a metaphysical inquiry into the immaterial principle underlying human existence. Swedenborg presents the soul, mind, and body as a hierarchical structure: the soul is the highest, spiritual core; the rational mind serves as the intermediary; and the body is the lowest, material expression. He examines how the soul governs the body and rejects materialist explanations of consciousness, instead rooting mental and rational life in a spiritual foundation. Drawing on Aristotelian, Cartesian, and Scholastic traditions, Swedenborg attempts to merge philosophy with natural science, giving psychology a metaphysical grounding.
