What happens when thawing permafrost changes the chemistry of a river?
In this episode of The Climate Translation, Dr. Mac explores the strange orange rivers appearing across parts of Arctic Alaska. These waterways may look polluted, but in many cases the source is natural chemistry triggered as thawing ground allows water and oxygen to reach minerals that were previously frozen away. Iron, sulfuric acid, and other metals can then move into nearby streams, turning rocks orange and altering water quality far downstream.
The episode also examines what these changes could mean for aquatic ecosystems, including Dolly Varden spawning habitat, and why not every Arctic river is destined to rust. Climate change is opening new pathways beneath the surface, but local geology, groundwater, and river chemistry determine what happens next.
