  • The Sacred Name YHWH: Why Occultists Treated Four Letters as a Formula of Creation
    Oct 3 2026

YHWH is the four-letter Hebrew divine name preserved in Jewish scripture, ancient inscriptions, and living religious traditions. Later writers gave those letters radically different roles: sacred scriptural name, object of mystical contemplation, Christian theological argument, cosmological pattern, and modern occult formula.

This episode follows the documented transformation through surviving objects and books. It begins with Johannes Reuchlin’s 1494 printed Christian interpretation, then returns to ancient and medieval Jewish sources before tracing the decisions of Abraham Abulafia, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Reuchlin and his teacher Jakob Jechiel Loans, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, and Aleister Crowley.

The central tension is not whether the four letters mattered. They clearly did. The question is who claimed the authority to explain them, preserve them, translate them, and assign them new meanings.

  • The Eye of Horus: Why This Ancient Symbol Became an Occult Icon
    Sep 26 2026

The wedjat, commonly called the Eye of Horus, survives on coffins, amulets, a mummy’s arm, and a funerary papyrus from ancient Egypt. Its most intimate surviving setting may be the outer coffin of Myt, a child buried at Deir el-Bahri during the Middle Kingdom.

This episode follows the image through documented Egyptian objects: Myt’s coffin, the nested coffins of Hapiankhtifi, excavated amulets from Lisht and Malqata, a wedjat placed on a mummy’s left arm, and the Greenfield Papyrus. It then crosses a much later historical divide to Aleister Crowley’s modern occult writing.

The evidence establishes ancient Egyptian religious uses and a later occult reinterpretation. What it does not establish is an unbroken secret transmission carrying one fixed meaning from pharaonic Egypt to modern esoteric movements.

  • Sigil Magic: How Symbols Became Tools of Intention
    Sep 12 2026

A private symbol made from a written desire may appear to be a modern invention, but its history reaches through centuries of talismans, planetary seals, spirit diagrams, and ritual manuscripts. This episode follows the crucial change introduced by Austin Osman Spare: the movement from inherited occult seals to a symbol designed by the practitioner from a personal intention.

From British Library manuscripts and the grimoire tradition to Spare's The Book of Pleasure, Kenneth Grant's posthumous recovery of Spare, and Peter J. Carroll's chaos-magic adaptations, the story traces how one obscure artistic and magical theory became a widely repeated ritual technique.

The historical record can show how symbols were made, circulated, and used. It cannot settle the central question raised by practitioners: when a sigil seems to work, did the mark influence events beyond the practitioner, or did ritual change the practitioner in ways that changed the next event?
