  • A Story Worth Sharing
    Jul 30 2023

Imagine your life taking a dramatic turn in an instant. That's what happened to Dan Williams when he suffered a sudden heart attack at the age of 63. It was a wake-up call that shook him to his core.

But instead of letting this setback define him, he made a choice. He refused to give up. With sheer determination, Dan joined a master’s track club to reconnect with his youthful days of running. He started on a journey of resilience, slowly regaining his fitness and quality of life.

It wasn't easy, but with the guidance of a coach and the support of his teammates, he rediscovered his love for competition. And his journey reached its peak when he became a gold medalist at the Maryland Senior Olympics.

That achievement brought him a tremendous sense of personal accomplishment and a newfound purpose in life. And that's when he realized, he had to share his story.

He founded the New Heart for Life community aiming to motivate individuals of all ages to bring about a transformation, regardless of their fitness interests or previous challenges.

He believes his story can resonate with anyone, regardless of their age or fitness level. That's why he is in high demand for speaking opportunities sharing his experience, and encouraging others to apply these principles in their own lives.

To reach even more people, he documented his journey in a book entitled; 21 Fitness Principles. In it, he shares the blueprint that led to his comeback story. It's a guide for those who yearn for a similar transformation.

Now, Dan is proud to be recognized as an all-American masters track athlete and fitness influencer. It feels like he's been blessed with a second chance to relive his youth.

But let's go back to where it all started - his high school years. That's when he first discovered his passion for running, joining the cross-country team. Running became a significant part of his life, and he embraced every opportunity to participate. Reflecting on your younger days and the things that brought you joy can guide you in discovering your fitness journey.

He even challenged himself to train and compete in marathons during his twenties and thirties.

But as life's demands piled up, he got caught in a web of work, stress, and unhealthy habits. Slowly but surely, Dan’s passion for running faded away.

However, his heart attack changed everything. It reignited the fire within him and made him realize what he had been neglecting - the very thing that brought him joy.

So, whether you're young or old, an athlete or just starting your fitness journey, his hope is that his story can resonate with you. It's a story of resilience, determination, and the belief that it's never too late for a fresh start and a new heart for life.

He wants to challenge you to reflect on your own life and ask yourself, what is that thing that brings you joy? What is that activity or passion that you've been neglecting? It could be anything - running, dancing, swimming, painting - whatever it may be, he encourages you to reconnect with it.

And remember, setbacks do not define us. They are merely opportunities for growth and transformation. Just like his heart attack became the catalyst for his incredible comeback, your challenges can be the stepping stones towards a better version of yourself.

Surround yourself with a supportive community, seek guidance from mentors and coaches, and embrace a mindset of resilience. Remember, you are never alone in this journey toward rediscovering your passion.

Dan believes that together, we can rewrite our stories. We can inspire others to live a life filled with purpose and joy, no matter our age, fitness level, or past challenges.

  • Damien Leake
    Jul 20 2023

DAMIEN> I started running roughly 15 years ago. Cause I didn't get to do it when I was younger. I, a lot of people say, well, they were in high school, but they ran in college.

I didn't get to do that, I was working by the time I was in high school, so I didn't start to run again until about 15 years ago when I discovered Masters Track and Field.

DAN> And what was the trigger for getting you into the masters?

I was coaching kids. Okay. I was coaching kids, and I went to what they call an all-comers meet.

Yep. And I saw older people running and I was. Whoa, wait, what about, Hey, yeah. What about me? I can, I can still do that. Right? And so they said, “Well join Masters Track and Field. And I went, ah, you mean we get another shot at this? We get to do it more again. Yeah. They said, sure. And I went in two weeks later I was running in my first meeting.

DAN> Awesome. And what advice do you give masters athletes?

Right now that we have a spirit of 16 and an age of maybe 76 or 66 or 56, what advice would you give us to keep that spirit in check and not get injured?

DAMIEN> Well, the main thing is to keep in mind that you are 76. Okay? You're not 16 anymore. 16-year-olds, they're invincible.

You are not. Note to self. You are not invincible. What you have to do is, is be consistent. Don't try and do too much. Listen to your body. Okay? When it says something to you, pay attention. It will tell you. Don't act like you're 16 and ignore it.

Even if it's a twitch, pay attention to it because as I said, 16, 17, you think you're invincible. It doesn't matter what you do. So you have to make sure that you're paying attention and, where you are and know the difference between pain and injury. You know, pain doesn't mean you're hurt so much, it just means this is uncomfortable.

Right. If your body starts to say, okay, this is now an injury. Yep. That's it. Stop. Wait until you heal.

DAN> And I want you to think about this before you answer it but give the Masters Track audience and the others in the New Heart for Life world in one word; “What does Masters Track mean to you.

Persistence - that would have to be the word.

Because that's what it takes. Don’t let yourself be discouraged and be persistent. And that's what I mean earlier when I said; Take your time, get yourself in shape. Move slowly. Don't try and do it all at once. Don't try and think all of a sudden, I can still do what I did.

Baby steps. Be persistent about it. Be persistent. You do a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow. I often talk to some of my friends. They say, well, what do I need to do? I say,

This is what you do. You haven't walked in a long time. You haven't been doing this.

What you need to do is a little bit. Give me 10 minutes every night, 10 minutes of something, some exercise every night for 10 minutes.

Persistence is power, persistence, and just keep at it. Keep at it.

And, you'll find that your body starts to respond accordingly.

  • Senior Athletes Fitness Exam
    Jul 1 2023

The SAFE was designed by physical therapist, Dr. Becca Jordre, through testing of nearly 4,000 National Senior Games athletes over the past decade.

"We look at four different areas of fitness. We look at cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, fitness, muscle fitness, and balance fitness. They're gonna get their vitals checked and we're gonna look at their BMI, their height, and weight. We're gonna measure around their midsection and see if they're carrying more weight around their midsection than would be healthy.

We're gonna test their fast walking speed measure of power. We're gonna test how fast they can get up and down from a chair five times. We're gonna do flexibility of their arms and their goals and their hips, and we're gonna look at their posture and then we do their balance. The goal of the S.A.F.E. Is to give these athletes feedback that's not watered down."

Visit SAFE at the National Senior Games and take the SAFE exam at The Village at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
