  • Can You Repair a Damaged Relationship With Your Child? (Part 10 – Breaking Relationships Series)
    Nov 1 2026

You've Made Mistakes as a Parent. But Does That Mean You've Ruined Your Relationship With Your Child?

If you've ever yelled at your child, lost your patience, said something you regret, or allowed your own childhood wounds to influence how you parent, this episode is for you.

Let's start with an important truth: You don't have to be a perfect parent to raise emotionally healthy children. But you do need to be willing to repair when things go wrong.

In Part 10, the final episode of the Breaking Relationships Series, we shift our focus from how parent-child relationships get damaged to something even more important: how we can begin healing them.

Because making mistakes doesn't mean you've ruined your child. What matters is what you do next.

In this episode of the Masterful Parenting Podcast, we explore:

    • The power of repair: Why parenting isn't about perfection but about taking responsibility when we get things wrong.

    • How to apologize genuinely: Learn the difference between a meaningful apology and one that shifts blame onto your child.

    • Don't make your child responsible for your emotions: Why your apology should focus on their experience rather than making them comfort you.

    • Listen without becoming defensive: How to create space for your child to share how your actions have affected them.

    • Rebuilding trust: Why one apology isn't enough and how consistency, accountability, and changed behavior create emotional safety.

    • Creating new relationship patterns: Simple, practical ways to rebuild connection through everyday interactions.

One of the most powerful things you can say to your child is:

“I've been thinking about our relationship, and there's something I wish I'd handled differently.”

You don't need to have all the answers. You need the courage to acknowledge your part, listen, and make a commitment to do things differently.

    💡 Your takeaway: The strongest relationships aren't conflict-free. They're repair-rich.

📝 Your action step: Have one honest conversation with your child this week. Acknowledge something you wish you'd handled differently, take responsibility, and ask:

“Is there anything you wish I understood about how you've experienced me?”

Then listen. Without defending. Without correcting. Without explaining away their feelings.

Remember, it's never too late to begin creating a different relationship with your child. Small changes, repeated consistently, can create powerful new patterns.

  • The Real Danger of Ignoring Your Child's Feelings? Pt. 9 #breakingrelationships #podcastseries #parentingtips
    Oct 31 2026
Breaking Relationships Series | Masterful Parenting Podcast

Why do some children stop sharing their feelings with their parents?

Have you ever told your child, “You're fine,” “Stop crying,” or “It's not a big deal”?

Perhaps you were trying to comfort them, help them move on, or teach them to be resilient. But what if, without realizing it, these responses are teaching your child that their feelings aren't important—or that they shouldn't bring their emotions to you?

In Part 9 of the Breaking Relationships Series, we're exploring how ignoring, dismissing, or minimizing our children's emotional experiences can gradually create emotional distance in the parent-child relationship.

Children experience big emotions. They feel disappointment, frustration, sadness, anger, fear, and worry. They don't always know how to process or express what they're experiencing. They need us to help them navigate those feelings—not make them feel ashamed for having them.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Emotional invalidation: How seemingly harmless comments like “You're fine” or “Stop crying” can make children feel unheard and misunderstood.

    • Feelings versus behaviour: Why we can validate our children's emotions while still maintaining appropriate boundaries. All feelings are allowed, but not all behaviours are acceptable.

    • Building emotional literacy: How to help children identify, understand, and put words to their emotions.

    • Listen before you fix: Why children sometimes need us to listen and sit with them rather than immediately offer advice or solutions.

    • Why children stop sharing: How repeatedly dismissing their feelings can teach them that there's no point in opening up to us.

One of the most important distinctions in this episode is that validating your child's emotions does not mean agreeing with their behaviour or giving in to their demands.

You can say, “I understand you're angry, but it's not okay to hit your brother.”

You can acknowledge their disappointment while still holding your boundary.

What matters is that your child knows their feelings are safe with you, even when their behaviour needs correcting.

    Because here's the truth:

A child can't learn to regulate emotions that they aren't allowed to experience.

When children repeatedly feel dismissed, they may eventually stop coming to us with their worries, disappointments, and struggles. And that's how emotional distance begins.

    Your Parenting Challenge This Week

For the next seven days, practice connecting with your child's feelings before correcting their behaviour.

Instead of immediately fixing the problem, try asking:

    “Tell me what happened.”

    Then listen.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer our children isn't an answer. It's the experience of being heard, understood, and accepted.

Listen to Part 9 of the Breaking Relationships Series and discover how to create a relationship where your child feels emotionally safe coming to you—even when life gets difficult.

  • Controlling Our Children (Part 8 - Breaking Relationship Series) #parentingtips #unhealthyparenting
    Oct 25 2026

How Much Control Is Too Much?

As parents, we want to protect our children, guide their decisions, and help them avoid unnecessary mistakes. But what happens when our desire to help turns into a need to control every aspect of their lives?

From choosing their clothes and managing their friendships to solving every problem and preventing every mistake, overcontrolling parenting can unintentionally send children a painful message: “I don't trust you to figure this out.”

In Part 8 of the Breaking Relationships Series, we explore how excessive control can undermine a child's confidence, independence, decision-making skills, and trust in their own abilities.

Sometimes, what we see as protection, our children experience as a lack of trust.

In this episode of the Masterful Parenting Podcast, you'll discover:

    • What overcontrol looks like: Recognize the difference between providing guidance and taking over your child's life.

    • Helicopter parenting: Understand when being involved becomes doing everything for your child.

    • The importance of failure: Why children need safe, age-appropriate opportunities to make mistakes, solve problems, and develop resilience.

    • Raising independent thinkers: Learn how offering choices and gradually increasing responsibility builds confidence and sound decision-making.

    • How to help without taking over: Discover the power of asking, “Do you want help, or do you want me to just listen?”

You don't have to stop being involved in your child's life. The goal is to shift from controlling their decisions to equipping them to make their own.

💡 Your takeaway: Children need guidance, not ownership. They need parents who provide structure and support while allowing them the space to grow into capable, confident individuals.

📝 Your action step: Identify one area where you regularly take over. This week, step back, offer your child an age-appropriate choice, and allow them to experience the result safely. You might be surprised by what they can do when you give them the opportunity.

Remember, the goal of parenting isn't to raise children who need us to make every decision for them. It's to raise adults who trust themselves to make decisions, navigate challenges, and build healthy relationships.
