Most people rely on willpower to stop bad habits but willpower is finite and we either end up folding or even if it works in one area we find ourselves creating new bad habits in other areas.

In this episode I will explain why.

  • Think - Do - Reward
    May 4 2026

In this episode I am going to discuss what I believe to be the downsides of this approach.

Our brain works on reward and when we start rewarding ourselves for activities we find hard to do then we end up making the activity harder in the long run.

Would love your thoughts about this.

  • The Expectation Effect
    May 4 2026

So often we feel disappointed and frustrated because things haven't worked out as we thought they would.

What we don't realise is that we are the cause of that negativity. We think it is reality that is the problem but actually it was our expectation that was incorrect.

Our expectation is an imagined future. It doesn't exist, we have just projected what we think the outcome and the path to that outcome should be.

It's the gap between expectation and reality that causes us the real pain.

On the flip side, when reality is better than expected we feel really good. This is because dopamine is released in the brain when our reality is better than what we expected.

When reality does not measure up to expectation our brain signals to stop releasing dopamine and this is where the discomfort comes from.

  • The Two Darts
    Apr 20 2026

The two darts is a Buddhist concept that describes how pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.

The first dart is the unavoidable pain of life, both physically and emotionally. This is unavoidable and we will all experience it.

The second dart is the suffering that we add by the way we frame the pain we are experiencing. This part is optional.

Often we throw second darts when first darts haven't even been thrown.

Take control of your second darts and watch your life improve.
