  • Funding Won't Buy You AI Citations
    Sep 28 2026

Welcome to The GEO Show, the briefing on Generative Engine Optimization and AI visibility. Brought to you by GEOforge.

In this solo roundup, Paris Childress, founder of Hop AI and co-founder of GEOforge, covers nine stories from the week in AI search, led by a Machine Relations analysis showing that funding won't buy you AI citations.

    In this episode:

    • 💸 Funding won't buy you AI citations
Machine Relations checked 24 AI companies that announced funding between September 21 and September 26 against nearly 17,000 eligible answer runs and 132,514 citation events. 17 of the 24 had no cited answer run at all, and those 17 had announced $1.25 billion in funding. The analysis measured source citations only, not whether AI systems know or mention these companies.
    • 🎯 Win the citation, win the mention
AISO analyzed almost 35,000 GPT and Gemini observations across 75 anonymized projects. On unbranded prompts, GPT mentioned the target brand in 49% of answers that cited its own site versus 2.8% when the site was not cited. Gemini showed 58% versus 3.8%. Crawl, citation, and mention form one funnel.
    • 📰 PR Newswire brings GEO into PR distribution
PR Newswire launched a GEO brand report in Asia Pacific, powered by Cision-owned Trajan and embedded in PR Newswire Amplify, so customers can move from a visibility gap straight into amplification. Off-site citation building is one of the biggest levers for AI visibility, which puts PR agencies in a strong position.
    • 🔎 Perplexity retires Sonar for the Agent API
Perplexity retired its Sonar API tiers on September 27 and made the Agent API its primary surface. The agent now decides which tools to invoke, from web search to MCP connections, making AI answers less reliant on search results.
    • 🤖 Microsoft turns Copilot into an always-on coworker
Microsoft unveiled Copilot Autopilot on September 25, a persistent cloud-hosted agent with its own identity, memory, computer, and permissions. Private agents are becoming a new surface for GEO.
    • 📊 Meta Muse tracking becomes a commodity feature
LLMPulse added Meta AI and Muse tracking on September 27, covering 18 AI models, with Meta tracking starting at 12 euros per month. Agents like Meta Muse are now surface areas to measure in their own right.
    • 🔓 Open-source GEO measurement and fan-out searches
ELMO is an MIT-licensed, self-hostable AI visibility platform. Self-hosting is free and managed cloud starts at $29 per month. Paris explains a workflow for re-optimizing pages around fan-out search queries, which Bing Webmaster Tools already shows.
    • 📉 86% of AI recommendations went outside Google's top 10
High Salience tested 100 applicant tracking software buyer questions in ChatGPT with web search. Of 388 recommended brand mentions, 333 were brands whose own domain did not rank in Google's top 10. The study used one run per question, so answer variance was not measured.
    • 🛒 SharkNinja's AI agents handle 20,000 chats a week
SharkNinja CIO Velia Carboni told Diginomica that Salesforce Agentforce agents handle around 20,000 customer chats per week, including shopping and product selection. Agents everywhere are becoming potential salespeople for brands.

  • Why GEO Will Dwarf SEO
    Sep 27 2026

Welcome to The GEO Show, the briefing on Generative Engine Optimization and AI visibility. Brought to you by GEOforge.
In this solo roundup, Paris Childress, founder of Hop AI and co-founder of GEOforge, covers ten stories from the week in AI search and closes with his case for why GEO will dwarf SEO.
    In this episode:

    • 🔄 Google's September 2026 spam update can move AI visibility
Google began its September 2026 spam update on September 24. It applies globally and may take up to two weeks to roll out. Because most prompts rely on real-time search retrieval, a shift in rankings changes which sites get cited, so we recommend annotating core updates in AI visibility tracking.
    • ⚡ Perplexity rebuilds retrieval with Photon
Perplexity says Photon now serves all production traffic, with P99 retrieval ranking latency down from roughly 800 milliseconds to 65 milliseconds and 68% lower estimated model plus search cost across six agentic benchmarks. These are Perplexity's own benchmarks, but retrieval infrastructure is now a variable in GEO measurement.
    • 🤖 "AI blocked" is too coarse to diagnose discovery
Citation Works classified 302 of 500 S&P 500 robots.txt files and found zero blanket blocks for OpenAI search bot and Claude search bot, two for PerplexityBot, five for GPTBot, and four for ClaudeBot. Robots directives do not prove crawler behavior, so track how each AI bot actually crawls your site.
    • 📋 Getting cited is not the same as getting named
In category roundups cited by AI answers, established vendors corroborated by other sources were named in 64 of 78 citing answers. Newer vendors that ranked themselves first in their own roundups were named in only 8 of 85. A listicle alone is not enough: outside category recognition turns citations into brand mentions.
    • 🔌 First-party knowledge becomes agent callable
Stravito launched an MCP server on September 24 for permission-scoped, source-cited company research, and Eventia followed on September 25 with a native MCP server for its event data. Proprietary brand knowledge is moving from crawlable pages to resources agents can query directly.
    • 🚗 Automotive GEO verticalizes around shopper intent
CarLocal expanded its automotive AI answer engine offering, citing Cox Automotive's Q2 study: 63% of in-market shoppers plan to use AI during their next purchase, while only 29% of dealers say they are adjusting for AI-powered search.
    • 💸 $14 per month now buys a GEO plus SEO stack
Easy Fetcher's starter plan bundles AI visibility, citation tracking, SEO analytics, audits, and MCP access for $14 per month billed annually. The low end is commoditizing fast, but AI visibility tracking is sampling: we run 30 to 40 runs per prompt to get the margin of error below plus or minus two points.
    • 📈 GEO case studies shift the sales battle to outcomes
Growthner reports a cloud GPU client grew from 30 to 120 AI brand mentions and 200 to 500 cited pages, and a design SaaS client reached roughly 1,000 monthly ChatGPT referrals. No control groups are disclosed, but publishing volume looks like the driver.
    • ⚠️ Profound discloses another data incident
Profound's status history records a September 24 incident affecting Perplexity and Google AI Overviews data collection, with six hours and thirty-seven minutes of degraded service. Collector health is now part of measuring AI visibility.
    • 🧭 Why GEO will dwarf SEO
Agencies are rebundling AI search into SEO service tiers. Paris argues that is the wrong mental structure: SEO is performance marketing, GEO is brand marketing, and over time GEO will dwarf SEO.

  • Google Just Made YouTube Ads Conversational
    Sep 26 2026

Welcome to The GEO Show, the briefing on Generative Engine Optimization and AI visibility. Brought to you by GEOforge.

In this solo roundup, Paris Childress, founder of Hop AI and co-founder of GEOforge, leads with Google's new Business Agent for YouTube ads, then covers seven more stories: Criteo's ChatGPT Ads data, ZenMedia, a machine relations citation index, Google's developer knowledge agent skill, Athena HQ, Ahrefs, and free GEO audit tools.

    In this episode:

    • 📢 ChatGPT Ads crosses 2,000 brands through Criteo
Criteo says more than 2,000 brands now advertise on ChatGPT through its integration, which has expanded to 61 markets. It reports click-through rates two to three times higher than comparable formats, roughly four times higher spend after activating prompt smart ads, and more than 80% of ad-driven traffic from new customers. These are Criteo-reported figures, not an independent benchmark, but they are the first sizable ChatGPT Ads data set.
    • 📉 One blended visibility score hides a 44-point engine gap
ZenMedia tracked 900 buyer intent prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok. In one campaign, the same brand appeared in 15.5% of prompts on its weakest engine and 59.5% on its strongest, while the five-engine average was 45.6. Paris argues a single blended share of voice number is basically meaningless: optimize engine by engine, or at least split ChatGPT from Google.
    • 🎬 Google makes YouTube ads conversational
Google introduced Business Agent for YouTube ads, so viewers can ask a conversational AI questions about products or brands without leaving the video. Paris calls it the most important story of the day and predicts YouTube ads will start appearing in Google AI Mode and possibly AI Overviews, blurring the line between organic and paid GEO.
    • 🏢 Vendor-owned sites lead the top 100 cited domains
A machine relations index found 29 of its 100 most cited domains are vendor-owned, versus 22 editorial publications and 16 market and company databases. It shows composition, not causation, but it cuts against the earned-media-only narrative and argues owned content still deserves real investment.
    • 🤖 Google turns its documentation into an agent tool
Google released a retrieving developer knowledge agent skill that teaches AI coding assistants to pick the right developer knowledge MCP tool, handle retrieval errors, and fall back to its REST API. Canonical knowledge is moving from web pages to resources agents can call directly, like MCP endpoints, APIs, and retrieval-ready product data.
    • 📈 Athena HQ's Rootly case study raises the proof bar
Athena HQ reports Rootly's citation rate rose from 3% to 30% across tracked prompts and its mention rate from 7.5% to 18% within months. There is no published control group, fixed prompt list, or attribution, but the category is still short on case studies.
    • ▶️ YouTube appears in 22.5% of Google AI Overviews
Ahrefs tracked 4.2 million Google AI Overview responses: YouTube appeared in 22.5%, Reddit 10%, Wikipedia 7%, Facebook 6%, and LinkedIn just 0.6%. Paris says video is the number one strategy for winning visibility in AI Overviews, and a brand-new video that nails the prompt can still win the citation.
    • 🆓 Free GEO tooling compresses the audit layer to zero
Optimize.ai is promoting a free GEO platform that checks 50-plus AI search signals, audits up to 15 pages, and generates files like llms.txt, robots.txt, and FAQ schema. Measuring AI visibility is becoming commodity infrastructure, so the value moves to execution and strategy.
