What would Jesus’ followers have seen before they knew that the tomb would be empty?
Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb confronts us with the physical finality of crucifixion. From there, this episode follows the raising of Lazarus, the difference between resuscitation and resurrection, and Paul’s description of a body transformed by God’s Spirit.
The resurrection is not an escape from material reality. It is God’s vindication of the crucified Jesus—and the beginning of a claim that would cross an adversarial boundary when Paul, once a persecutor, became a witness.
