  • A Rheumatologist's Perspective on Prior Authorization and Timely Access to Treatments

    In this episode of the Simplify Prior Authorization podcast series Denise Balch once again speaks to Dr. Imtiaz Khan, a licensed rheumatologist in Canada and the U.S. Dr. Khan is the former Head of Rheumatology at The Mississauga Hospital and is now in private practice and continues to be active in clinical research. Dr. Khan became Chair of the Ontario Rheumatologists Association (ORA) Private Payers committee in 2019.

    Dr. Khan shares his insights into how new developments in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis are changing patient treatment, including the introduction of biosimilars and new small molecules taken orally known as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. He speaks to the efficiencies the electronic specialty authorization claims process for public payers in Ontario (SADIE) has created, and opportunities for the private sector to benefit from electronic prior authorization to ease the administrative burden and patient wait times without compromising drug cost management.

  • Dermatology, Treatment Progression and Prior Authorization

    Featuring a conversation between Denise Balch, President, Connex Health and Dr. Neil Shear, recently retired Dermatologist and Professor Emeritus, Temerty Faculty of Medicine: Dermatology, Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology. Before his retirement in 2021, Dr. Shear held several appointments at University of Toronto, Sunnybrook and Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. In retirement he continues to teach and consult, including on data monitoring committees (DMC), whose focus is examining drug safety for those drugs in development and those on the market.

    In this podcast Dr. Neil Shear and Denise Balch will speak about the advances of dermatology as a profession and in the available treatments for dermatology patients. They explore some of the complex and debilitating dermatological diseases that can lead to mental health issues, withdrawal from society, and an inability to work if not treated effectively. They also discuss treatment progression protocols and the impact of newer treatments that are prescribed for patients who do not respond well to traditional therapies. Some of these treatments are accompanied by reimbursement challenges as a result of the prior authorization process which both dermatologists and patients must navigate to gain access.
