In this episode, host Luke Dietterle talks with Deana Dothage, Extension and Engagement Specialist, Field Specialist in Community Development, MU Extension, St. Charles County and Mayor William "Willie" Richter of West Alton, MO, and systems administrator for Orchard Farm School District for a firsthand look at West Alton, Missouri, a small river town with a big story. Deana shares what inspired her Return to Rural Missouri series, and Mayor Richter, an alderman since 2000 and mayor since 2009, opens up about his decades of service and deep ties to the community. West Alton has weathered more than its share of change from a population in the thousands down to just 356 today, shaped by the Great Flood of '93 and the 2019 flood. Yet the town endures. It's a conversation about resilience, community pride, and what makes a small town worth fighting for.
