  • The Reform of Preaching
    Oct 6 2026

On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss the Reformation as a movement focused on the reform, not of the church, but of preaching. The church is whole and complete as a gift of Christ given in word and sacrament, and needs no reform; nor is the institution of the church identical to the God-created reality of word and sacrament. But in order to make sure that what we preach is actually the gospel, Reformation is needed – including a return to the original work that Martin Luther completed in his evangelical movement in Wittenberg.

  • Parables
    Sep 8 2026

On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss parables. Parables present a tricky obstacle to most preachers because of the temptation to present the gospel in metaphorical fashion, leaving hearers to apply the metaphor to themselves. Instead, parables must be untangled so as to uncover a direct form of the gospel promise that can be applied directly to the hearer through the word of the preacher.

  • The Preaching Office in Matthew's Gospel
    Jul 2 2026

On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson take up some of the topics that appear during the Season of Pentecost in Year A's selections from Matthew's gospel. Specifically, they discuss the preaching office and the calling of the disciples to proclaim the gospel to the world. Though Matthew's gospel has been misunderstood in this regard, a proper view of the preaching office emerges from the proper distinction of law and gospel, and the centrality of promise and suffering to the task of the preacher.
